This chapter examines the impact of colonialism on post-colonial political development. It first provides an overview of the post-colonial world, noting how politics in developing countries are influenced by their pre-colonial heritage as well as colonial and post-colonial experiences. In particular, it considers post-colonial theory, which addresses the continuing impact that colonialism has on post-colonial development. The chapter proceeds by describing pre-colonial states and societies such as Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australasia, where varying patterns of state formation influenced both the kind of colonization that they experienced and their post-colonial development. It also considers colonial patterns in the post-colonial world and the occurrence of decolonization before concluding with an assessment of the legacy of colonialism to post-colonial states.

This essay recapitulates Libya's colonial past and analyses its peculiarities; specifically, those connected to the dialogical aspects of the Italian–Libyan colonial relationship. The main objective is to highlight a controversial part of Italian–Libyan history: the ruthless Italian colonial domination of Libya from 1911 to 1943, and the controversies raised when Libya demanded compensation for colonial damages and losses. The essay describes the reasons why Italians undertook imperial rule in Libyan territories and the consequences of colonial domination; it analyses Italian colonialism in Libya from a postcolonial perspective in order to interpret colonial–ethnic relations of that time and understand their legacy in the present; and it discusses why the history of Italian colonialism has voids and distorted recollections – this allows us to see why the Italian–Libyan colonial past has been subject to manipulation by politicians serving national interests.

The practice of neo-colonialism was initially introduced by the United States through the establishment of institutions like the Bretton Woods Institutions (IMF and World Bank) and continuing the legacy, China soon took over and had been using FDI to further its neo-colonial agenda in various parts of the world, including Pakistan. This research explores the history of colonization in the Sub-Continent and traces the origins of neo-colonization with a focus of the United States as a pioneer of the practice and China as the contemporary neo-colonizer. The research traces the transition from colonialism to neo-colonialism and examines the case of Pakistan as a victim of neo-colonialism, presenting the case based on evidence. The paper concludes that neo-colonialism is indeed colonialism with a changed outlook and proposes certain recommendations for Pakistan to minimize the impact of Chinese colonialism.
