We present recent results on experimental measurements and theoretical simulations for terahertz wave generation (quantum mechanical simulation) and detection (four-wave-mixing) with ambient air and selected gases. We demonstrate standoff terahertz wave generation for potential applications of terahertz air photonics in remote sensing and identification.

Metamaterials and metasurfaces have demonstrated many unusual properties that are useful for creating high-performance terahertz devices and components. Integration of functional materials allows metasurfaces to expand their scope of applications. Here we show that hybrid metasurfaces can provide ultrafast modulation of terahertz waves that are critical for future applications in terahertz imaging and communications.

Metamaterials are engineered materials which offer superb electromagnetic performance over naturally occurring materials, and offer great potential to construct novel devices operating in the terahertz frequency regime. Here we experimentally demonstrate metamaterial narrow band filters, perfect absorbing elements for THz imaging, and ultra-fast THz switches. Experiments are supplanted with simulation and theory, thus verifying high performance.

We combine photonic crystal and effective medium techniques in order to launch and collect a slab-mode terahertz beam, and show that it can support terahertz communications. This provides a pathway to the integration of terahertz optics, toward compact and cost-effective systems.

We present novel optically tunable 3D metamaterials operating at terahertz frequencies with an approximate tuning range of 30%. As a function of incident laser power, a red-shift in the resonant frequency from 1.74 THz to 1.16 THz was experimentally achieved. Our device has potential applications as a terahertz modulator or switch that complements previous approaches.

Abstract During the past decade electromagnetic metamaterials have realized many exotic phenomena that are difficult or impossible using naturally occurring materials. It is their resonantly enhanced interaction with electromagnetic waves that underpins their attractive qualities, which are increasingly important in the terahertz frequency range. Passive and active terahertz metamaterials and devices have enabled novel functionality and unprecedented terahertz device performance. These demonstrations prove their potential to address the so‐called terahertz gap, a technology vacuum associated with the deficiency of natural materials with a desirable terahertz response.

Reaching high average powers and room temperature operation for THz sources has become the key challenge for the uptake of THz applications that require real-time imaging. In this work, we show that by placing a photoconductive switch within a quasi-resonant cavity based on a metal-insulator-metal geometry, we are able to generate, at room temperature, average THz powers greater than of 200 µW, with the frequency of the THz emission centred at 1.5THz, specifications ideally adapted to NDT. We demonstrate proof-of-principle real-time THz imaging.

This paper presents a high performance terahertz (THz) metalens with attractive features such as high numerical aperture and high transmission efficiency, which has not been reported in the literature. A metalens prototype operating at 1.56 THz has been designed, fabricated and characterized. The measured results agree well with theoretical predictions, validating the performance of the proposed THz metalens.
