An addition of oxoanions of tellurium to unicellular alga Pseudococcomyxa simplex resulted in a high accumulation of tellurium: the concentration of Te exceeded 10,000 mg/kg DW after 7 days with tellurite addition. Tellurium was reduced during cellular uptake and nanorods of metallic tellurium were formed in the cells. Electron microscopy of cells without any chemical pretreatment allowed direct observation of the presence of intracellular tellurium nanorods; the addition of tellurite was found to be more effective in terms of length and number. Abstract Despite tellurium being less abundant in the Earth's crust than gold, platinum, or rare‐earth elements, the number of industrial applications of tellurium has rapidly increased in recent years. However, to date, many properties of tellurium and its associated compounds remain unknown. For example, formation mechanisms of many tellurium nanostructures synthesized so far have not yet been verified, and it is unclear why tellurium can readily transform to other compounds like silver telluride by simply mixing with solutions containing silver ions. This uncertainty appears to be due to previous misunderstandings about the tellurium structure. Here, a new approach to the tellurium structure via synthesized structures is proposed. It is found that the proposed approach applies not only to these structures but to all other tellurium nanostructures. Moreover, some unique tellurium nanostructures whose formation mechanism are, until now, unconfirmed can be explained.

The co-existence of a small amount of tellurium seems to improve deoxidation of steel with aluminum. The practical realization requires a subsequent treatment upon which the residual tellurium must be removed out of steel. The three experimental examinations led to the following conclusions:1) Ar stream can fast rid molten iron of tellurium. 40%-50% of tellurium was taken away for 20 min. under the present experimental conditions. The rate satisfies the general kinetic equation for vaporization of alloying elements.2) Rare earth metal is the most suitable substance to be added for the present aim, i. e. the removal of tellurium at low oxygen potential.3) A flux of CaF2-CaCN2 mixture is applicable instead of expensive REM. The mixture with a composition ratio of 1:1 succeeded in reducing the residual concentration of tellurium to about 20 ppm (rd. 90% reduction of tellurium) during 20 min. treatment with little change in the concentrations of oxygen, carbon and nitrogen in the melt.

A detailed study of the effect of tellurium concentration on the cathodoluminescence spectra of chemically-doped zinc sulphide polycrystalline samples shows that emission from single tellurium isoelectronic centres is saturated before the emission from paired tellurium isoelectronic centres. At added tellurium concentrations of < 10−3 atomic parts only the single tellurium emission is present whereas at or above 5 × 10−2 atomic parts of tellurium only the paired tellurium emission is observed. At 10−2 atomic parts tellurium both tellurium emissions arc observed. No increase in tellurium emission intensity is observed when the tellurium concentration is increased above 5 × 10−2. The tellurium concentrations capable of producing both tellurium emission bands in polycrystalline samples are shown to produce the same behaviour in single crystals also. In addition, conditions for producing the paired tellurium emission by ion implantation are reported, along with thermal quenching measurements and time-resolved spectroscopy measurements and introduction of donors in ZnS: Te by implantation of Al.

The polymeric tellurium cation [Te] in Te7WOBr5 is made up of almost planar Te7 units, which are linked to form a folded band (see Figure). Related structural motifs were hitherto only known in the case of tellurium polyanions. Te7WOBr5 can be obtained by oxidation of tellurium with a WOBr4/WBr5 mixture.

Square-wave voltammetric behavior for tellurium(Ⅳ) was studied in hydrochloric acid medium using a hanging mercury drop electrode. The reduction of tellurium(Ⅳ) was found to be irreversible and catalized by acid. Analytical conditions for the determination of tellurium(Ⅳ) and effects of diverse ions were also investigated. The detection limit of tellurium(Ⅳ) was . The amount of tellurium(Ⅳ) on the electrode surface was .

Determination of high-content tellurium in commercial metallic tellurium and low-content tellurium in tellurium-enriched material was carried out by volumetric titration with potassium dichromate. The above method is suitable for tellurium determination of the materials containing 1%~99.5%tellurium.
