Euphorbia motuogensis M. T. Li, X. Z. Lan, H. P. Deng & W. L. Zheng, sp. nov., a new species from Motuo, Tibet, China, is described and illustrated here. It is closely similar to Euphorbia sikkimensis in having terete root, alternate leaves, well-developed pseudoumbellate inflorescence, cyathium, smooth and glaborus capsule, but Euphorbia motuogensis is clealy distinguishable by its pilose stems, involucral leaves color, secondary involucral leaves absent, cyathophylls number and color, and five similar glands. Furthermore, molecular phylogenetic analyses of sequences from both nuclear ribosomal ITS confirm that this species is distinct from morphologically similar species in this subgenus.

Individuals of the sedge Cyperus virens Mich. are frequently infected by the systemic fungus Balansia cyperi Edg. (Clavicipitaceae). Developing inflorescences of infected plants are enveloped by fungal hyphae, preventing their expansion. Viviparous plantlets are sometimes produced on the aborted inflorescences of infected plants and the plantlets themselves are infected by B. cyperi. To estimate the extent of infection and vivipary, five populations of C. virens from the southwestern coast of Louisiana were sampled along randomly located line transects. Approximately one-half of over 500 sampled plants were infected by B. cyperi and about 30% of the infected plants were viviparous. There were significant differences between transects within populations and among populations in the percentage of infected plants and of infected, viviparous plants. Viviparous, infected plants were, on average, four times as big as uninfected plants and three times as big as nonviviparous, infected plants. Induced vivipary represents a mechanism of vegetative reproduction where host plant and fungus are dispersed simultaneously in the same propagule.

The influences of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices on the culturable aerobic–heterotrophic bacterial communities in the rhizosphere and hyphosphere of cucumber plants (Cucumis satvius) were investigated. Mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants were grown in compartmentalised growth units, each with a root compartment and two lateral root-free compartments. Samples representing rhizosphere, root-free soil, root-free sand and washed sand extract were collected 52 days after sowing from treatments both with and without mycorrhiza. No significant difference in total bacterial number was observed between the mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal treatment. Fourteen hundred bacterial colonies were isolated and identified by fatty acid methyl ester analysis using the Sherlock system (MIDI Inc.), 87 species within 48 genera were identified with a similarity index >0.30. Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter and Burkholderia were the genera most frequently encountered. Large differences in bacterial community structure were observed between rhizosphere soil, root-free soil/sand and washed sand extract, whereas major differences between mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal treatments were observed for a few bacterial species only. Isolates identified as Paenibacillus spp. were more frequently found in the mycorrhizal treatment and especially in the washed sand extract with mycelium of G. intraradices, indicating that bacteria within this genus may live in close association with mycelium of these fungi.

Eight new sesquiterpenes, namely, albocinnamins A−H (1−8), along with two known ones (9 and 10), have been isolated from the fungus Antrodiella albocinnamomea. Compound 1 possesses a new backbone that might be derived from cadinane-type sesquiterpene. Structures of the new compounds were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic data analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and ECD calculations. Compounds 1a and 1b showed cytotoxicity against SW480 and MCF-7 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 19.3 to 33.3 μM, while compound 2 displayed cytotoxicity against the HL-60 cell with an IC50 value of 12.3 μM. In addition, compounds 5 and 6 exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with MIC values of 64 and 64 µg/mL, respectively.
