Abstract:
The objective of this study was to understand the farmers' perception of the challenges of agroforestry systems (SAFs), as well as the contribution of these systems to environmental improvement and the quality of life of the families involved. The study was conducted in five SAFs in the western region of Sao Paulo. After identifying the SAFs in the region, a questionnaire was applied with the responsible farmers, using a semi-structured road map, to identify the processes and objectives for implementing SAFs, management and cultural practices, environmental services, value aggregation and generation of income. The floristic survey of the arboreal and shrub component was carried out, in which the diversity and floristic density of the species were evaluated. The information was processed electronically, using the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS. Based on farmers' perceptions, SAFs contribute to food production, income generation, and environmental recovery through the provision of environmental services. However, the few marketing channels, low infrastructure, little value aggregation, and lack of financial control undermine the maximum efficiency of exploitation of natural resources provided by SAFs. As an alternative, the floristic survey shows a wealth of species with the potential to be better used, especially the fruits that contribute to the production of food for subsistence of the families. Keywords:
