Abstract:
Amaç: Alternatif tıp, insanlık tarihinde birçok hastalıkla mücadelede önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmada Glycyrrhiza glabra L.'nin biyolojik aktivitesi araştırıldı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bitkinin kök kısımları etanol ile ekstrakte edildi. Antioksidan ve oksidan potansiyelleri Rel Assay kitleri kullanılarak belirlendi. Antimikrobiyal aktivite, agar seyreltme yöntemi kullanılarak standart bakteri ve mantar suşlarına karşı test edildi. Antiproliferatif aktivite, Lung Carcinoma Cell Line'a (A549) karşı MTT testi ile belirlendi. Sonuç ve Tartışma: Çalışmalar sonucunda bitkinin TAS değeri 8.770±0.171, TOS değeri 14.590±0.191 ve OSI değeri 0.167±0.005 olarak ölçülmüştür. Bitki ekstraktının 50-200 µg/mL konsantrasyon aralığında standart bakteri ve mantar suşlarına karşı inhibisyonu gözlemlendi. Ayrıca bitki ekstraktının konsantrasyon artışına bağlı olarak güçlü antiproliferatif aktivite gösterdiği belirlendi. Bu çalışmalar sonucunda G. glabra'nın önemli bir doğal antioksidan, antimikrobiyal ve antikanser ajanı olarak kullanılabileceği belirlenmiştir.Keywords:

Natural remedies are more acceptable in the belief that they are safer with fewer side effects than the synthetic ones. Herbal formulations have growing demand in the world market. The present work deals with the development & evaluation of the herbal hand wash containing ethanolic extract of liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Hand-washing is very important process in day to day life. Hands are major source through which microbial infections may occur thus proper hand was must be required using appropriate hand wash formulation. Herbs are known to have antimicrobial properties thus utilization of such herbs as antimicrobial agent is a common practice now. Present study involves formulation of herbal hand wash using extract of liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Disc diffusion method was utilized for evaluation of the antimicrobial activity against skin pathogens of the prepared herbal hand. Its efficacy was checked and compared with the standard commercial hand wash. Results revealed that extract of liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) formulation was more efficient in reducing the number of organisms from hands based handwash with less or no side effects. Thus, owing to higher antimicrobial activity efficacy these herbal extract can be used in the preparation of herbal hand wash on commercial scale.

Glycyrrhiza glabra is a perennial herb, belonging to family fabaceae. It is also known as Licorice, sweet wood, Liquorice. It is a popular ingredient and well known remedy for coughs, syrups and various medicines with its relieving properties. Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn. Is one of the most important herb which is used in Ayurvedic medication since thousands of years. Medicinal plants are often used for treating various diseases. Now a days, the demand various herbal medicines, pharmaceuticals & health related products is increasing widely. Herbal medicine, include fruit, vegetables, as dry material on the extract of Glycyrrhiza to cure different diseases and maintenance of health. Glycyrrhiza is used in herbal preparation which is obtained from licorice roots for the treatment of liver related diseases. The root can help to heal gastric ulceration. It is also used in traditional medicine for its ethnobotanical and pharmacological value. It possesses anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, skin whitening, anti-diuretic agent. The present article on Glycyrrhiza glabra is an effort to compile with the medicinal uses, ethnobotanical, pharmaceuticals and therapeutic effects.

Glycyrrhiza glabra L.usually known as Mulaithi, Yashtimadu or licorice is a common herb, which has since long been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its mystic effects to cure numerous diseases such as hepatitis C,ulcers, pulmonary and skin diseases etc. The herb has been used in medicines for thousands of years. Its roots comprises of a compound that is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Significant constituents isolated from licorice include flavaonoids, iso flavonoids, saponins, tripentenes and the most imperative is Glycyrrhizin. Due to these elements it has important pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and antiinflammatory as well.

Glycyrrhiza glabra is used as Ayurveda medicine for many decades due to its great and broad medicinal activity. The present study aimed at carrying out phytochemical analysis and evaluates its in vitro antidiabetic, and antioxidant activities of traditional medicinal plant Glycyrrhiza glabra which was collected from the nearby area of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. An in vitro antidiabetic activity was evaluated by alpha-amylase methods and in vitro antioxidant activity by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl) assay. The Aqueous extracts of Glycyrrhiza glabra root showed significant inhibition of alpha-amylase as compared to methanolic extract at various concentrations, whereas methanolic extract showed significant scavenging activity as compared to Aqueous extract at various concentrations. The phytochemical analysis revealed that Glycyrrhiza glabra root showed presence of secondary metabolites flavonoids, Saponin, glycosides, terpenoids etc. in different extracts which might be responsible for significant in vitro antidiabetic and antioxidant activities. Identification and isolation of active substances and secondary metabolites from such medicinal plants and their in vivo efficacy evaluation will help in further validation of pharmacological activities.
