Abstract:
This report will summarize the group?s work to provide recommendations to secure nuclear facilities before, during and after an extreme weather event. Extreme weather events can have drastic impacts to nuclear facilities as seen by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011. Recent hurricanes in the United States including Hurricane Harvey demonstrate the devastating effects these storms can have on infrastructure and the surrounding communities. The group is attempting to identify the gaps that potential small modular reactor (SMR) facilities will need to address in order to provide adequate site security before, during and after extreme weather events. This effort proceeded in three parts to provide insights and recommendations to secure Small Modular Reactor facilities for extreme weather events:(1) a literature review of academic articles as well as relevant documents including the existing regulatory framework and recommendations from the IAEA, NRC, and DOE, (2) subject matter expert interviews from a wide variety of security backgrounds, and (3) modeling and simulation on a hypothetical SMR facility. Special attention was paid to the interactions between stakeholders and nuclear facility design considerations, particularly the topics of safety and security. Engineering design issues from safety and security perspectives were discussed and included in simulation. Each step informed the proceeding, with the result including full tabletop scenarios of EWE impacts to security system effectiveness on the hypothetical model. This systems-level analysis provides results to inform recommendations to secure SMR facilities. Keywords:

The field of active matter in general and microswimming in particular has experienced a rapid and ongoing expansion over the last decade. A particular interesting aspect is provided by artificial autonomous microswimmers constructed from individual active and inactive functional components into self-propelling complexes. Such modular microswimmers may exhibit directed motion not seen for each individual component. In this review, we focus on the establishment and recent developments in the modular approach to microswimming. We introduce the bound and dynamic prototypes, show mechanisms and types of modular swimming and discuss approaches to control the direction and speed of modular microswimmers. We conclude by highlighting some challenges faced by researchers as well as promising directions for future research in the realm of modular swimming.

Modular and reconfigurable robotic systems have been designed to provide a customized solution for the non-repetitive tasks to be performed in a constrained environment. Customized solutions are normally extracted from task-based optimization of the possible manipulator configurations but the solution are not integrated, for providing the modular compositions directly. In this work, in the first phase, a strategy of finding unconventional optimal configurations with minimal number of degrees-of-freedom are discussed based upon the prescribed working locations and the cluttered environment. Then, in the second phase, design of the modular and reconfigurable architecture is presented which can adapt these unconventional robotic parameters. Rather than generating and evolving the modular compositions, a strategy is presented through which the unconventional optimal configurations can be mapped directly to the modular compositions. The generated modular composition is validated using Robot Operating System for the motion planning between the prescribed working locations in a given cluttered environment.

As a new organizational form of resources integration in the new economic era, modular organization plays a pioneering role for enterprises in achieving great-leap-forward development. Under this circumstance, the researches on modular organization theory are increasingly booming. However, most existing researches just touch upon the surface of modular organization few studies involve the internal parts of modular organization, especially the internal structure of modular organization. Therefore, based on the characteristics of modular organization and from the angle of traditional organizational theory, this paper starts with the existing research results of modular organization, puts forward the specific method of internal structural design of modular organization, and is committed to researching the internal structure of modular organization to deepen the theory of modular organization and enhance the practical significance of modular organization.

It has been seriously difficult to create demand of modular construction because Korean modular method has been considered as container house or lightweight steel house. Actually, barrier factor of modular construction for activation was difficult to produce modular continuously in factories based on stable amount of demands. So, this research found successive factors of modular construction and proposed the method of demand creation through a plethora of case analysis by building types. In addition, this research found the scale of modular potential market. Owners will be able to use this strategy that is proposed in this research when they make a decision about construction system. Also, the modular construction can make potential market in Korea. As a result, modular system producer can make their business strategies and make continuous demand by conjugating the method of creating demand for modular construction which is proposed in this research.

Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change, yet many of their impacts on human populations are not well understood. We examine the relationship between prior extreme weather events and food environment characteristics. To do so, we conduct a U.S. county-level analysis that assesses the association between extreme weather events and two common food retail environment dimensions. Overall, we find a relationship between higher levels of historic extreme weather exposure and lower food availability and accessibility. In addition, we find heterogeneity in association across the distribution of the number of extreme weather events and event type. Specifically, we find that more localized extreme weather events are more associated with a reduction of access and availability than broad geographic events. Our findings suggest that as extreme weather events amplify in intensity and increase in frequency, new approaches for mitigating less acute and longer-term impacts are needed to address how extreme weather may interact with and reinforce existing disparities in food environment factors. Furthermore, our research argues that integrated approaches to improving vulnerable food retail environments will become an important component of extreme weather planning and should be a consideration in both disaster- and food-related policy.
