Abstract Historically circumstances that represent an extreme of the human condition attract the attention of those who record contemporary events. Perhaps one of the strongest influences on retrospectives is the achievement of excellence. Excellence is admired and hated, sought and avoided, and in a true sense rarely achieved. Excellence requires performing at the outer limit of physical, emotional and mental capacities. And even then for some this level of effort expenditure may not be enough to produce excellence. While many rationalize excellence as purely endowed or distort the concept with self-serving labels, Shin'chi Suzuki's work on developing excellence with “common” people demonstrates the various elements necessary for the opportunity to achieve excellence. Suzuki's work will be reviewed along with the profiles of selected world achievers. The prerequisites for the pursuit of excellence will be formulated and suggested along with a discussion of how the demands of achieving excellence often exceed the will to excel.

Any academic department should place high value on excellence. Regardless of the area or nature of the department, the age of the faculty, availability of funds, or particular administrator, excellence should be the paramount pursuit of all faculty. It is necessary to distinguish between individual and departmental excellence. Both are important. However, departmental excellence is more than merely the aggregation of program excellence of individual faculty. There is considerable difference between a community of scholars and collection of individual scholars.

In an effort to empirically test three propositions linking excellence, planning, and performance, 41 of Peters and Waterman's [Peters, T., R. Waterman. 1982. In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America's Best Run Companies. Harper and Row, New York.] excellent companies were compared with two benchmark samples—matched according to size and industry grouping—of North American companies. Our results indicate that excellence and performance are not synonymous, and that the planning processes of excellent firms are generally not significantly different from those of the two benchmark samples. In addition, by analyzing four “traits” of excellence, we show that the popular traits of excellence are not the exclusive preserve of the so-called excellent companies.

The purpose of this essay is to outline two strategies that can be used to increase recognition of nursing excellence—in research, education, and practice. The first strategy is to gain recognition for excellence in nursing in and beyond universities, to collaborate with members of other disciplines, and to publicize what we study and what we teach. The second strategy is to gain recognition for excellence in nursing in and beyond clinical agencies, to publicize what we do when interacting with people who seek our services, and to implement the standards of the Pathway to Excellence Program® and/or the Magnet Recognition Program®.

Except some limited initiatives aimed at fostering excellence in scientific research (Corradi & Rostan, 2009), the idea of academic excellence has been traditionally associated in Italy with teaching, especially with the mission of 'producing' excellent students and excellent young researchers.

In youth and sports forums in Diyala province. Research problem presented by this study is the lack of a measuring tool for the level of administrative excellence for youth and sports forums, so this study explores the extent to which sports institutions in Iraq, represented by sports forums, can apply administrative excellence by identifying the level of administrative excellence for youth and sports forums in the governorate. This paper aims to analyze how students attending six of the most prestigious, selective, and high-performing public schools in Chile perceive the concept of excellence and what factors influence their perceptions. A survey was administered to 1,828 students enrolled in 11 th and 12 th grade. The results show that students share a multidimensional idea of excellence. Five dimensions are identified but, according to students’ perceptions, there were two constructs that stood out the most: “effort and self-improvement’” and ‘”social commitment and thoughtfulness.” We find that variables such as expectations about the future and perceptions about schools explain the dissimilar ideas of excellence shared by students. This research gives voice to students on a current topic of the educational agenda –the concept of excellence– and invites researchers to re-think this construct from perspectives other than academic achievements
