Abstract:
The resinous exudate produced by Commiphora myrrha (Nees) Engl. is commonly known as true myrrh and has been used since antiquity for several medicinal applications. Hundreds of metabolites have been identified in the volatile component of myrrh so far, mainly sesquiterpenes. Although several efforts have been devoted to identifying these sesquiterpenes, the phytochemical analyses have been performed by gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC–MS) where the high temperature employed can promote degradation of the components. In this work, we report the extraction of C. myrrha by supercritical CO2, an extraction method known for the mild extraction conditions that allow avoiding undesired chemical reactions during the process. In addition, the analyses of myrrh oil and of its metabolites were performed by HPLC and GC–MS. Moreover, we evaluated the antiviral activity against influenza A virus of the myrrh extracts, that was possible to appreciate after the addition of vitamin E acetate (α-tocopheryl acetate) to the extract. Further, the single main bioactive components of the oil of C. myrrha commercially available were tested. Interestingly, we found that both furanodienone and curzerene affect viral replication by acting on different steps of the virus life cycle.Keywords:

Abstract The essential oil of Salvia multicaulis Vahl (Labiatae) collected from the suburb of Sari, north of Iran, in July 2004, was isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed by means of GC and GC/MS. Fifty components were identified in the this oil. The major constituents of the essential oil were camphor (11.0%), 1,8-cineole (10.7%), borneol (8.6%) and α-pinene (7.5%).

Objective:Study on the components of the essential oil from Sonchus brachyotus DC.Method:This research is to identify the components of the essential oil from Sonchus brachyotus by GC-MS.The essential oil were extracted by the water streem distillation.Result:36 components were identified and represented 89.49% of the peak of the essential oil.Conclusion:The main constituents are 2-Pentadecanone,6,10,14-trimethyl-(35.8%) and n-Hexadecanoic acid(35.3%).

Rosemary is an aromatic shrub native to the coasts of the Mediterranean region. Understanding the changes of chemical composition of essential oil is critical for more targeted rosemary harvesting, which can lead to higher-quality essential oils for agro-food, medicinal, and cosmetics uses. Therefore, rosemary plants were harvested at pre-flowering, full-flowering, and post-flowering stage grown in the experimental area of the Department of Field Crops at Çukurova University in order to determine the most suitable harvest time for the highest amount of essential oils and their important compounds. Essential oil content decreased slightly from the pre-flowering to post-flowering. The highest essential oil content (1.68%) was determined at the pre-flowering stage. Twenty-eight compounds were found representing 95.74%-96.74% of the total essential oil. The major compounds for rosemary were camphor (28.43%-32.74%), 1,8-cineol (20.80%-22.61%), isoborneol (6.05%-7.28%), verbenol (5.17%-6.98%), and limonene (5.71%-6.23%), respectively. Consequently, the optimal harvest time in terms of essential oil content, as well as camphor, 1,8-cineole and limonene content, may be considered as pre-flowering stage.

Abstract The chemical composition of the essential oils of Salvia scabiosifolia Lam. from Bulgaria, has been determined by GC and GC-MS. The yield of oil obtained by water distillation was 0.14 %. The basic components, among the identified 60, representing 97.5 % of the total oil, were camphor (19.2 %), borneol (7.8 %) and camphene (7.0 %). The other components (concentrations higher than 3.0 %) were α-caryophyllene (4.2 %), β-pinene (4.0 %), γ-terpinene (3.5 %), p-cymene (3.4 %), eucalyptol (3.3 %), limonene (3.2 %) and α-pinene (3.0 %).

Abstract The essential oils of the aerial parts (flower, stem and leaf) of Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff. were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Although all samples showed similar overall chemical compositions, the major components of the stem were identified as being borneol (36.9 %), bornyl acetate (14.0 %) and 1,8-cineol (13.6 %) and in the flower were found to be 1,8-cineol (22.0 %), camphor (20.1 %), α-pinene (19.0 %) and camphene (12.0 %). In the leaf oil of the plant β-terpinene (23.0 %) was the predominant compounds. All oils were richer in monoterpenes.

Abstract The Chemical composition of the essential oil of Anthemis tenuisecta Ball. (Anthemideae) was analyzed by gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Forty eight components accounting for 89.5 % of the oil were identified, being camphor (17.5 %), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (17.1 %), borneol (11.5 %), sesquicineole (11%) and camphene (5.7 %) the main compounds. In the antibacterial diffusion assay, the oil showed activity against Gram-positive bacteria.

AbstractThe current study is purposed to examine the yields, chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Artemisia annua L. essential oils obtained at pre-flowering, initial flowering and post-flowering growth stages. The main constituent of the essential oils in pre-flowering stage was camphor (47.88%). At initial flowering, composition of the essential oil changed drastically. Artemisia ketone increased from 4.62% to 55.31% and camphor decreased to 11.50% resulting in an artemisia ketone chemotype essential oil. In post-flowering stage, both camphor and artemisia ketone did not change significantly compared to initial flowering. These changes of the essential oil compositions caused various alterations in antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the essential oils were slightly increased in parallel with artemisia ketone. On the other hand, the decrease in the camphor content executed a negative impact on antifungal activities. Correlation analysis revealed that artemisia ketone was slightly more antioxidant and more potent antibacterial while camphor was found to be more effective on investigated fungal strains.Keywords: Artemisia annua L.biological activitiesessential oilgrowth periodssweet wormwood

Mitracarpus vilosus is widely used among the indegenes of Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State for the treatment of skin lesions. This study elucidated the phytochemical constituents in 80% methanolic leaf extract of Mitracarpus vilosus. Phytochemical screening and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses were carried out on the leaf extract. The qualitative analyses showed the presence of the following phytochemicals, tannins, terpenoids, saponins, cardiac glycosides and steroids. The phytochemical screen did not reveal any flavonoids. However, Squalene 14.27%, n-Hexadecanoic acid 11.60%, 2-Octylcyclopropene-1-heptanol 8.43%, Octadecanoic acid 5.45%, 1,4-Naphthalenedione 3.19% were the first five major bioactive compounds revealed by GC-MS in the leaf extract. The results of this study validated the bioactive constituents in Mitracarpus vilosus which may be the justification for its use for the treatment of skin lesions and other ailments. Essential oil (EO) from fresh aerial parts of Rosmarinus officinalis L. growing wild in Lebanon, was analyzed by GC-MS. Altogether, twenty-seven compounds, accounting for 93.83 % of the whole oil, were identified. 1,8-cineole (32.83 %), β-caryophyllene (12.94 %), borneol (11.65 %), camphor (10.33 %), bornyl acetate (4.19 %), α-pinene (4.10 %), and α-terpineol (3.87 %) were the main components of the oil.
