    Settlement is an important performance parameter of square foundation.The transfer matrix method is applied to calculation and analysis of square foundation.The influence of factors,such as vertical load,foundation width and deformation modulus of ground soil,on the settlement of foundation is analyzed.Suggestion is given to reduce foundation settlement.Calculation results show that the transfer matrix method can effectively calculate the settlement of square foundation.

    Top-shaped concrete block foundation is a new foundation structure.The FEM is used to analysis the stress distribution and ground subsidence of the soil under three different foundation structures.By comparing the calculation results,the conclusion that the top-shaped concrete block foundation can improve the stress homogeneous distribution and reduce the ground subsidence is drawn.

    The study gives an example of the sinking pier case at Takeda Interchange of National Highway NO.3 in Taiwan. We got the monitoring data, explored the impact on the consolidation settlement of piled-raft foundation from construction procedure and soil improvement by finite element method「Plaxis8.2」and predicted the degree of post-settlement. Analytic results are shown as follows:Firstly, the soil consolidation settlement model is built by the estimated soil parameters using the data of soil exploration. The calculation value of settlement and the measured value are identical. Secondly, soil improvement only shows effective in initial stage. The pre-consolidation settlement is smaller when building embankment is before pier than when building pier is before embankment.

    The horizontal geosynthetic reinforced mattress located on the top of vertical piles is idealized as a foundation beam,while the vertical piles and the surrounding soil are idealized as an elastic spring system.Based on the theory of the Winkler elastic foundation beam and with consideration of the interactional resistances on the interfaces up and down of the reinforced mattress,a deformation equation of the reinforced mattress is established;and its power series semi-analytical solutions are proposed.The presented method can consider the effect of the tensional force of the horizontal reinforcement on the settlement of the composite foundation.The study results indicate that the installation of the geosynthetic reinforcement in the mattress has a contribution to control foundation settlements.

    To improve the design method of foundation of transmission tower in mining subsidence area, and considering the interactions of transmission tower, ground and foundation, this paper presents a contrast research on the anti-deformation performance of two types of foundation (i.e. independent foundation and composite foundation with protecting apron) by finite element simulation. For valid simulation, we put forward the methods and principles of simplifying foundation and sand cushion. The research results indicate that, if the ground deforms in patterns of negative curvature, tension or compression, the structure stress and the horizontal support displacement of transmission tower can be reduced by 25% and 40% respectively by using composite foundation compared with independent foundation. If the ground deforms in pattern of positive curvature, the tower can be also protected by using the composite foundation instead of the independent ones, but the effect is less than that in the former three deformation patterns. The research findings provide the basis for improving the design method of transmission tower foundation in mining subsidence area.

    Based on the study at home and abroad, the theoretical calculation, numerical analysis is used to analyze pile-net composite foundation in different parameters, to research and analyze the settlement controlling ability of rigid pile composite foundation on soft clay ground in high speed railway. The research results show that settlement basin is in surface of pile (cap) net composite foundation, and uneven settlement of pile raft composite foundation. In a certain range of subgrade slope, the settlement of pile raft composite foundation is greater than that of pile (cap) net composite foundation; The increasing of pile spacing has obvious influence for the settlement of reinforced area, but the settlement of the area of underlying stratum has little change; The total settlement influence of pile cap size is not obvious. When the thickness of soft soil is more than 20m, pile raft composite foundation has economic and technological advantages.
