    Abstract:
Introduction: there is considerable evidence that psychosocial factors contribute in the etiology and the prognosis of cardiac illness. Currently, in Italy, psychologists are only obligatory in the cardiac rehabilitation setting, although there are indications that the patients could be experiencing distress also during other moments of hospitalization, when admitted for cardiac surgery. Objective and methods: the objective of this protocol is to gain more information about the cardiac patients, specifically during the various moments of hospitalization for cardiac surgery, by collecting data at admittance before cardiac surgery (t0), at admittance in cardiac rehabilitation (t1) and at discharge (t2) at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato Hospital. A psychosocial questionnaire was constructed after consulting the relevant national and international guidelines. Patients admitted for cardiac surgery and attending a rehabilitation program, will be evaluated by acquiring data about their civil status, religiosity, education and work capacity, social condition (including the presence and quality of intimate relationships and support received), previous psychological and psychiatric history, psychological status, lifestyle (including questions on nutrition, smoking, alcohol and substance abuse, with the administration of the Fagerström test for smokers), adherence to therapy (Morinsky test) quality of life (Satisfaction with Life Scale and a numerical rating scale ranging from 0-100), health perception (EuroQoL,only the numerical rating scale 0-100) and anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) at t0. Health perception, anxiety and depression are also measured at t1 and t2. Discussion and conclusions: This study is an attempt to identify the recommended psychosocial variables whichwhich need to be monitored during the cardiac patients' hospitalization for cardiac surgery, until cardiac rehabilitation. After implementing this study at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, attempts will be made to create studies on a national and international level to generate more evidence regarding these variables, in order to create tailor made interventions for these patients during these specific and delicate moments.

In Brazil, the clinical model has predominated in Home care (HC). A psychosocial approach is necessary for problems identified in the home environment. The objectives of this paper were to present a psychosocial approach instrument for HC patients and their families and to describe the applicability of the psychosocial model using this instrument. The instrument was applied to HC patients and their families by home healthcare professionals who were participating in a HC course. We observed that it was feasible, although clinical reasoning took precedence over psychosocial reasoning. This instrument must be validated and new research must be carried out to qualify its use in teaching and HC.

Patients with sarcoma are particularly vulnerable to psychosocial distress. The aim of this study was to collect preliminary data on the prevalence of psychosocial distress in such patients during follow-up care and identify risk factors associated with higher psycho-oncological stress levels. The study retrospectively enrolled 202 patients with bone or soft-tissue sarcomas who underwent routine psychosocial distress screening during their follow-up care. All patients were screened using an electronic cancer-specific questionnaire.Females and patients who underwent radiotherapy were more distressed. Psychosocial distress levels were markedly higher in the early postoperative phase, but approximately one-third of patients showed high psychosocial distress levels even more than 2 years postoperatively. The results underscore the importance of routine psychosocial distress screenings in patients with sarcoma, which should be performed throughout the follow-up period.

Three hypotheses have been most often cited on the link between infertility and psychosocial distress: (1) psychosocial problems trigger infertility; (2) infertility triggers psychosocial distress; and (3) there is an interactive causal relationship between infertility and psychosocial distress. The controlled research on these three hypotheses was reviewed. The thirty publications that met inclusion criteria provide convincing evidence that, taken as a whole, patients diagnosed and treated in infertility clinics show significantly higher levels of psychosocial distress than do control groups. As well, in general, female patients score higher on psychosocial distress measures than males. However, the authors conclude that research designs to date have failed to control crucial variables that permit conclusive empirical tests of the three hypotheses. The paper closes with recommendations for future research that would accelerate the evaluation of scientific data available on the subject.

The study explores the psychosocial care-givers knowledge and skills on medical and psychosocial issues in Hemophilia pre-and post participation in the training program conducted in four different North Indian States. The objectives of the study is 1) To approach a cross-section of psychosocial workers and ascertain their views on the psychosocial support in Hemophilia; 2) To critically examine the views/perceptions of the psychosocial workers pre and post training workshop .3) To analyze the responses of the psychosocial workers about medical and psychosocial implications of hemophilia. 4) To identify issues, emerging from empirical evidence, which could be utilized for preparing the guidelines for the psychosocial workers. The findings showed that overall the psychosocial care-givers awareness improved post training on different subsets on the psychosocial awareness questionnaire. This indicates that regular education and updating of knowledge of the care-givers is important. A close perusal of findings suggests that age and experience were closely related to the awareness on the psychosocial issues in Hemophilia. It was found that the young respondents' awareness significantly improved post training whereas there were moderate changes in the responses of the older participants. On the whole, the change in awareness level witnessed after training illustrates that by providing adequate education and information, good results can be achieved, that will benefit PWH and their families, as well as those responsible for giving care to patients suffering from hemophilia.
