Archaeological research of late Pleistocene sites in northeastern Brazil has rarely analyzed site formation processes from a geoarchaeological perspective. This has contributed to the long-held debate over the reliability of Pleistocene ages and the anthropic origin of stone tools and combustion features. In this work, we combine high-resolution geoarchaeological methods to study the formation processes of the Toca da Janela da Barra do Antonião North site (TJBA-North), located in a surface karst about 12 km northeast of the classical site of Boqueirão da Pedra Furada (Serra da Capivara, Piauí). The site contains stone tools and megafauna remains in sedimentary levels that have been dated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) as more than 20,000 years ago up to the early Holocene. Using micromorphology, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), micro-FTIR on the micromorphology thin sections, and magnetic analyses, we carried out a comprehensive study of the climatic conditions during the late and terminal Pleistocene and investigated the depositional history of the site.

The Rio Preto Basin and Rio Pardo Belt surround, respectively, the southeastern and northwestern portions of the Sao Francisco Craton. In this study, using carbon isotope and Hg stratigraphies, it is examined the possibility that carbonates of the Serra do Paraiso Fm. (Rio Pardo Basin) that overly diamictite/arkose of Panelinha Fm. or basement, and of the Sao Desiderio Fm. (Rio Preto Belt), represent Neoproterozoic cap carbonates. Composite C-isotope profiles yet to be completed and refined support this hypothesis. Carbonates of the Sao Desiderio Fm. exhibits C-isotope pathway similar to that obtained for the upper portion of the Sete Lagoas and Lagoa do Jacare formations of the Bambui Group, Minas Gerais. Hg values from carbonates of the Serra do Paraiso Fm. have been used as a proxy of volcanism intensity and CO2 buildup during snowball events.

The Earth's magnetic field over the past few millennia is studied from archeological and geological records obtained from different places around world. The southern hemisphere contributes with less than 5% of the global database for the past three millennia. Here, we will present preliminary directional and magnetic susceptibility results from sedimentary records of Lagoa dos Patos, Rio Grande do Sul State (Brazil) dated to the past six millennia. Results indicate stable remanent magnetization, which can be confidently used to understand the variations of the geomagnetic field in South America for the past few millennia.
