Abstract:
Objectives: Although the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative "My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene" has been lauded as effective in preventing hospital-associated infections, little is known about healthcare workers (HCWs)' hand hygiene behavior. In this study, we sought to assess knowledge and attitudes towards the concepts in this initiative, as well as associated factors, among Vietnamese HCWs at a general hospital. Methods: A structured questionnaire was administered to HCWs at a central Vietnamese general hospital in 2015. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with HCWs' knowledge and attitudes towards hand hygiene. Results: Of 120 respondents, 65.8% and 67.5% demonstrated appropriate knowledge and a positive attitude, respectively, regarding all 5 hand hygiene moments. Logistic regression indicated better knowledge of hand hygiene in workers who were over 30 years old, who were direct HCWs (rather than managers), who had frequent access to clinical information, and who received their clinical information from training. Those who worked in infectious and tropical disease wards, who had frequent access to clinical information, and who received information from training were more likely to have a positive attitude towards hand hygiene than their counterparts. Conclusions: Although many Vietnamese HCWs displayed moderate knowledge and positive attitudes towards the WHO hand hygiene guidelines, a key gap remained. Regular education and training programs are needed to increase knowledge and to improve attitudes and practices towards hand hygiene. Furthermore, a combination of multimodal strategies and locally-adapted interventions is needed for sustainable hand hygiene adherence. This paper discusses the causes of misunderstanding about the nature of Vietnamese calendars; about the ancient Vietnamese calendar-finding process; about the results of studying three old calendars that were produced by different Vietnamese dynasties; and about the differences that existed between Vietnamese and Chinese calendars when they existed simultaneously; and finally some consequences of studying these ancient Vietnamese calendars.

Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary is an essential part of Vietnamese vocabulary, which originated from Sino-Vietnamese elements. The implementation of teaching and learning Sino-Vietnamese elements and/or vocabulary takes place in primary education. Methods of teaching and learning Sino-Vietnamese elements and/or vocabulary in schools vary relatively greatly. This article is an attempt to suggest manipulations of teaching and learning Sino-Vietnamese elements and/or vocabulary through Sino-Vietnamese idioms. Apart from elucidating why using Sino-Vietnamese elements as the materials in teaching and learning Sino-Vietnamese elements and vocabulary, the main purpose of the article is to introduce 6 manipulations in the process of teaching and learning Sino-Vietnamese elements and vocabulary using Sino-Vietnamese idioms: collecting examples of Sino-Vietnamese idioms; searching for shifting Sino-Vietnamese idioms (temporarily referred as Vietnamese idioms) corresponding to the original Sino-Vietnamese idioms; interpreting Sino-Vietnamese elements in Sino-Vietnamese idioms; encoding sentences with Sino-Vietnamese elements; expanding Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary through Sino-Vietnamese idioms; deep practicing Sino-Vietnamese idioms (including several types of practice).

Can people with a name that is part-Vietnamese and part-foreign represent Vietnamese (cultural identity)? And my first thought was: When did Vietnamese people start adopting foreign names, and why? And we can split the answer to that question into two parts.

With the trends in globalization and internationalization, cross-culture work-related values are increasingly receiving attention of both managers and researchers. This study aimed to investigate the cultural differences in work-related values between Western managers and Vietnamese employees in Vietnam. In two areas in the South of Vietnam, 94 Western and Vietnamese companies participated with 763 Vietnamese employees, 43 Vietnamese employers and 33 Western employers who have completed a questionnaire. In addition, semi-structured interviews were administered with 11 Western employers and 33 Vietnamese employees to validate the findings from the questionnaire data. Significant differences in work-related values between Western employers and Vietnamese employees were found. Time perception and face-concern were found to be the two largest differences between Western and Vietnamese professionals. Implications are discussed for further training of Vietnamese prospective graduates.

This independent study project explores the relationship between overseas Vietnamese and local Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). The primary research methods included surveys, interviews, an experiment, and personal observations. The survey provided general knowledge on what Vietnamese people in HCMC thought about overseas Vietnamese. This survey was given to 200 participants in various locations in District 1, Thu Duc District, and District 9. The interviewees included university students, war veterans, Vietnamese with relatives in a foreign country, Vietnamese who tried leaving but could not, and overseas Vietnamese. The experiment was to see vendors’ treatment of overseas Vietnamese. It was conducted in three different sites with four tests each for a total of twelve tests. Lastly, personal observations have been made in the previous two visits to HCMC and since the beginning of this visit in December 2011. The primary field research data collected can be used to conclude that overseas Vietnamese people are viewed as equals to Vietnamese people in HCMC.

The paper, based on the analysis of changes in Vietnamese consumer culture in the context of globalization and international integration, provides suggestions for Vietnamese enterprises to access and dominate the domestic market. It can be seen that, Vietnamese people now tend to choose products made in Vietnam more than imported products of the same type because Vietnamese products meet the tastes of Vietnamese people and have reasonable prices for financial conditions of the majority Vietnamese people. Vietnamese enterprises have many advantages in accessing and dominating the domestic market, but many businesses have not paid enough attention.

This paper reported a study that acoustically examined the vowel features of Vietnamese language used by the Vietnamese community in Australia. Vowels produced by older (n=10) and younger (n=10) Vietnamese Australians residing in Brisbane, Australia, were acoustically examined and compared with those produced by corresponding older (n=10) and younger (n=10) Vietnamese residing in Ho Chi Minh/Can Tho City, Vietnam. The results showed that (i) almost all vowel tokens produced by the four groups of speakers were acoustically significantly different in vowel space; (ii) the Younger Vietnamese Australian residents' tokens of vowels which look similar in conventional Vietnamese orthography tended to cluster with each other; (iii) the vowel productions of the Younger Vietnamese residents in Australia tended to occupy higher and/or more front regions than those of the Younger Vietnamese residents in Vietnamese group in terms of the acoustic vowel space; and (iv) the vowel tokens produced by the Older Vietnamese residents in Australia and Older Vietnamese residents in Vietnam groups occupied different regions in the acoustic vowel space.

In this paper, we will not focus on the theory but pay attention to traits in practical activities of Sino-Vietnamese words in modern Vietnamese. The paper presents the appearance of Chinese characters in Vietnamese giving out the survey results so as to find pupils and students’ ability to recognise and use Sino-Vietnames to contribute data for the issue of Sino-Vietnamese position in modern Vietnamese.
