    Abstract:
In the framework of the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS tracker for the High Luminosity LHC, a power hybrid for usage in silicon sensor modules with macro-pixel and strip sensors has been developed. The power hybrid features three DC-DC converters in a two-step powering scheme, delivering three different low voltages (1.0 V, 1.25 V, 2.5 V) to the module electronics. A first prototype of the power hybrid has been developed. The prototype is fully functional and has been characterized in terms of power efficiency, voltage drops, dynamical behaviour, and radiated and conducted noise emissions. In this work the power hybrid concept and the prototype design are described, and the measurements are summarized.

This paper presents interactive simulation tools to support the enhancement of power electronics education considering DC to DC converters. These interactive tools make use of the benefits of Java language to provide a dynamic and interactive visualization of simulations in steady-state for idealized non-isolated DC to DC converters. Additionally, this paper discusses the features and the usage of the interactive educational tools to serve as a first design tool for the laboratory experiments in the power electronics courses. In this way, some results were confronted with a well-known simulator package and with experimental results in order to validate the developed interactive simulation tools.

An overview of the ATLAS liquid-argon calorimeter system is provided, along with a discussion of its operation and performance during the first year of LHC running. Upgrade planning related to the proposed high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC is also discussed, with an emphasis on the forward part of the calorimeter where the effects of the higher luminosity are a particular challenge.

This article reports the current status of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The focus is on proton physics performance with emphasis on the possible scenarios leading to an upgrade of the LHC performance. The far future of the machine will be shortly discussed. It is worth recalling that the main reference on the LHC machine is [1] together with the references cited therein.

ALICE is the CERN LHC experiment optimised for the study of the strongly interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions and devoted to the characterisation of the quark-gluon plasma. To achieve the physics program for LHC Run 3, a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus is ongoing. A key element of the upgrade is the substitution of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) with a completely new silicon-based detector (ITS 2) whose features will allow the reconstruction of rare physics channels not accessible with the previous layout. The enabling technology for such a performance boost is the adoption of custom-designed CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor as detecting elements. In this proceedings, an overview of the adopted technologies as well as the status of the detector commissioning will be given.

In this paper, a model order reduction method is proposed, to simplify power electronics converters and allow simulating large transmission systems using 100% power electronics. Unlike existing methods it keeps the system's physical structure, thus making the simulation and the analysis more flexible. This method is validated on a two-converter system and proves to be both conservative and accurate.

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the CERN LHC experiment optimized for the study of the strongly interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions and devoted to the characterization of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. To achieve the physics program for LHC Run 3 and 4, ALICE is undergoing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus during the ongoing second long LHC shutdown. A key element of the ALICE upgrade is the substitution of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) with a completely new silicon-based detector whose features will allow the reconstruction of rare physics channels which could not be accessed before with the ITS layout used during LHC Run 1 and 2. The enabling technology for such performance boost is the adoption of custom-designed MAPS (Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors) as detecting element. In this proceedings, the status of the construction and commissioning of the ITS upgrade will be detailed. The completion of the modules construction will be achieved soon and, in the meantime, the commissioning in laboratory is proceeding using the components already integrated in the detector.

Progress in the area of power electronics is reviewed, and the goals of power-converter evolution are examined. Examples at medium or high power ratings have been chosen in order to show that this evolution is not restricted to small power converters. It is noted that the development of power electronics relies on the progress made in the performance of switching semiconductor devices and in the design and control of the converters. It is shown how the extension of applications leads to a better understanding of the specificity of power electronics. It is demonstrated how the improvement of the components makes it possible to set more ambitious goals for power electronic converters. Examples are examined which illustrate two important trends: the increase of switching frequency and the reduction of disturbances.< >
