The stress of complex medical course, emotional immaturity, and adaptations to new surroundings are the challenges faced by the new medical entrants. Therefore, mentorship program was introduced to support them for their academic and personal development. The aim of this study is to introduce and to assess the perception of mentors and mentees on mentorship program.A mentorship program was designed for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) First Professional students. A 1-day workshop was conducted to sensitize the faculty. Seventeen faculty members from various departments volunteered to be mentors. After sensitization, 150 MBBS First Professional students were divided among these faculty members by lottery system. A regular visit of mentees was scheduled with the mentor. At the end of mentorship program, the perception of mentors and mentees was taken using a validated and semi-structured feedback questionnaire. A focus group discussion of students was also conducted.A total of 112 students and 16 faculty members completed the feedback questionnaire. The mentors considered this program helpful in their self-improvement, teaching, and communication skills. Most of the mentees felt that this program helped them emotionally and academically. It was a good way to develop a strong student-teacher relationship. All the mentors and mentees were satisfied with the mentorship program. The newly introduced mentorship program helped in the overall development of mentors and mentees. Both mentors and mentees were extremely satisfied with this program and considered this as a successful intervention.

Background: The benefits of mentorship on residents are well established. The current state of mentorship in General Surgery (GS) residency programs in Canada is unknown. The objectives of this study were to obtain GS residents’ and program directors’ (PD) perspectives on resident mentorship.Study Design: An electronic survey was developed and distributed to all 601 GS residents in Canada. All 17 PDs were invited for telephone interviews. Results: A total of 179 of the 601 residents responded. Ninety-seven percent (n=173) felt mentorship was important. Only 67% (n=116) identified a mentor and only 53% (n=62) reported a mentorship program. Most who identified a mentor (n=87/110, 79%) were satisfied with the mentorship received. Significant variations in mentorship existed between demographic subgroups and mentorship program types. Overall, residents (n=121, 74%) favoured having a required mentorship program.A total of 11 out of 17 PDs participated in the telephone interviews. The majority of PDs (n=9, 82%) were satisfied with current resident mentorship but most acknowledged that barriers exist (n=8, 73%).Conclusion: GS programs in Canada should ensure they are providing equal opportunities for mentorship across demographic subgroups. Programs are encouraged to examine both their program’s and their residents’ needs as well as local barriers to improve mentorship.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: There are many barriers to pursuing a surgical career in South Africa, some of which are unique to females. Mentorship has been proposed as a solution to mitigate these barriers. The value of mentorship has not been formally assessed among South African general surgeons and trainees METHODS: The study was part of a larger study designed to assess barriers to pursuing a career in surgery, including the value of mentorship. A 15-item questionnaire was designed and distributed via the Research Electronic Database Capture from 1 February 2020-3 April 2020. Data were analysed using Stata 15 SE. All responses were anonymised RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-nine (13.5%) of 955 potential participants responded to the survey of which 26% (33/129) were female. Sixty-seven per cent of respondents were specialist surgeons (87/129). Seventy per cent (90/129) of participants reported having a role model in surgery, however, 66% (86/129) reported they had no mentor in surgery. 107/129 (83%) participants reported the importance of mentorship. The need for a formalised mentorship programme to facilitate surgical training was recorded by 60% (78/129) of participants, while 18% (23/129) reported the need for a mentorship group specifically for females CONCLUSION: Eighty-three per cent of participants reported the importance of mentorship however two-thirds lacked a mentor. Most participants advocated for a mentorship group to facilitate surgical training. Establishing formalised mentorship programmes could mitigate the barriers to pursuing a surgical career Keywords: surgery, training, barriers, mentorship

In order to bring the aims of medical students training to success, in 2008, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University reformed the current medical undergraduate mentorship and established a new one based on promoting students' personal and professional development. It has been implemented in Batch 2006 students of the 8-year clinical medicine program. The preliminary results suggested that the mentor would redound to student development involving understanding medical knowledge, innovation and health. At the same time, some problems and relevant solutions was proposed. Key words: Personal and professional development; Medical undergraduate; Mentorship

Mentoring has been recognized as an essential component of medical education in order to harness one’s potential to the fullest. Most medical colleges in India including ours have acknowledged this fact and started mentorship programs for their undergraduate students, but the same is lacking when it comes to postgraduate students. We sought to assess whether the postgraduate trainees at our institute felt the need for a mentorship program directed at them. A semi-structured proforma was distributed randomly to 50 postgraduate students of our institute and data was collected anonymously. 92% students returned the filled proforma, 74% felt the need to start a mentorship program for postgraduate students, and 24% had been in a mentorship program in their undergraduate training. 10 out of these 11 felt the need to have a mentor during their postgraduate training as well. This study would help us plan the same with inputs about the structure of the program received through the semi-structured proforma. Keywords : Mentorship, Mentor, Postgraduate students.

BackgroundMentorship can be defined as developmental assistance offered to a junior employee or trainee by someone more senior and experienced in the field or work place. Mentorship in our pediatric residency training program has existed for years. However, no study has been done to evaluate perspectives, attitudes, and practice of mentorship in this accredited residency program.ObjectivesTo assess faculty and residents views and satisfaction about the mentorship process overall. Accordingly, to try to discern some recommendations in order to improve the practice and fill in the gaps.MethodologyThe study was conducted using mailed, two mirror-side sets of questionnaires to both residents and faculty staff members involved in the mentoring program in pediatric residency training. Results were then recorded and analyzed manually.ResultsThere is a large discrepancy in the views of residents and faculty staff in regard to their perception and practice of mentorship.ConclusionsTeaching and direct meeting sessions are obviously needed to train both faculty and residents about the appropriate mentorship culture and implementation.
