Abstract:
In real-life analytics-oriented information-integration projects, the processes of information curation and integration cannot be completely automated. Rather, in each large-scale project the key objectives include maximizing scalability and throughput, while at the same time keeping the processes manageable and productive for the human experts in the loop. In this paper, we describe our experience with addressing these major objectives in the process of building a scalable end-to-end data-extraction, integration, and analytics workflow in the domain of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The workflow is built using open-source tools, with the aims of enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of data collection and integration, while involving an acceptable level of efforts by collaborative multidisciplinary teams of humans-in-the-loop. We present the components of the proposed workflow, outline the challenges encountered in its development and testing, and discuss the experiences and lessons learned in enabling AMR experts and data analysts to interact with the workflow, with some of the lessons potentially applicable to other application domains. This paper brings up a design of XML-based workflow engine and gives an implementation of a web-based workflow management system. Workflow is the automation of business procedures and workflow engine is the key part to carry out the system. Workflow engine can supply the conditions needed for executing a workflow process. This paper focuses on the workflow description language[1,5]-X-WPDL (XML-based Workflow Process Definition Language) that we designed and the implementation of the engine. All of the workflow processes that our engine operates are all described by X-WPDL. The engine translates the workflow process into an execution sequence that is consist of events or activities, then loads it in and drives it to run. The engine also offers an interface for the manager and participants for interaction. The application case will show that our implementation of this engine and the whole system is capable of processing workflow.

Whether in workflow model or in workflow management system, workflow engine plays a very important role.In workflow management system, workflow engine delivers the messages between different users and implementers as a task manager.A good message transfer mechanism can effectively improve the work efficiency of the workflow engine, thereby improving the efficiency of the workflow system. This paper proposes a message queue based on publish/subscribe to deliver to deliver messages. It can improve the efficiency of the workflow engine and workflow management system.

In scientific research management projects, if the process model changes, without a workflow technology, the codes need to be modified and the workload of modification will increase significantly. After introducing a flexible workflow technology, what can be done is to directly define the new process model. This paper mainly introduces ECA rules on the basis of workflow meta-model to design a flexible workflow: the ECA rules will express execution logics of the basic workflow, and the basic elements of the process model in the approval process of scientific research projects will be represented by ECA. The design of the flexible workflow in scientific research management system will include flexible workflow engine and the process approval platform for scientific research project management with ECA rule analysis. The flexible workflow implemented in this paper can better guide the workflow engine to adapt to the current environment, and decide the different execution process according to the specific process instance contexts. The method proposed in this paper better supports the needs of scientific research project management.

Current workflow planning methods are hard to use in existing workflow management system(WfMS) since they generally demanded that workflow engine can not meet special requirements. To slove this problem,a static approach for process pattern-based workflow planning is proposed.Process adaptation is used to handle workflow definition generated by workflow planning. As a result, existing workflow engine in enterprise is used directly.Workflow optimization is adopted to make workflow execute effectively as well. Besides, workflow planning itself is embedded in the existingWfMS in the form of a workflow process, which made the details ofworkflow planning transparent to users.

Workflow engine is the core of a workflow management system. It explains workflow model definition, controls and maintenances how a workflow instance works. The relational data structure of a embedded workflow engine-based workflow management system is analysed. A three-tier system architecture based on J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) is investigated. In particular, a workflow-enabled platform is developed by integrating a workflow middleware into the framework, to build a embedded workflow engine-based workflow management system.

Recently, many organizations such as companies or institutions have demanded induction of very large-scale workflow management system in order to process a large number of business-instances. Workflow vendors have focused on physical extension of workflow engines based on device-level clustering, so as to provide very large-scale workflow services. Performance improvement of workflow engine by simple physical-connection am ong computer systems which don't consider logical-level software architecture leads to wastes of time or cost for construction of very large-scale workflow service environment. In this paper, we propose workcase-based workflow architecture and impl ement a very large-scale workflow management system based on the architecture. We prove that software architectures to be applied on a workflow engine have an effect on scalability and performance through workcase response-time evaluation of our proposed system.
