Abstract:
There is a growing recognition of the benefits of non-pharmacological interventions in individuals with dementia. However, limited studies have explored the impact of personally meaningful music in this population. This controlled pilot study aimed to determine if personally meaningful music is effective in improving mood and behavior, and if a person-centered approach to music-based interventions is feasible in individuals with dementia. Twenty individuals with dementia participated in a 6-week study in an Assisted Living community. A cohort of residents were exposed to a meaningful (MS) or control song with a wash-out period of 5 days between the two exposures. Each personal MS (e.g. wedding song, song from childhood) was identified by the participant or family member using a validated questionnaire. The control song was identified by interviewing nursing staff members. Participants were observed for 5 minutes before, during and after the exposure to music and emotions were recorded using the Observed Emotion Rating Scale (OERS). The Neurobehavioral Rating Scale (NRS) assessed behavior, and vital signs (BP and pulse) were collected before and after interventions. Average age of participants was 81 (SD= 8) years; 40% had Alzheimer's disease, 30% had Frontotemporal Dementia and 30% had Vascular Dementia. Adequate data for analysis were available for 18 participants (90%). OERS analysis demonstrated no group differences before music exposure; participants had more singing (p<0.001) and were less expressionless (p=0.002) during the MS condition (with a trend toward more pleasure), and had more singing (p=0.005) and were looking around more (p=0.034) after the MS. NRS analysis yielded minimal symptoms both pre- and post-intervention. Systolic BP was greater in the control song condition pre-intervention (p=0.007). This study demonstrates that personally meaningful music is a feasible intervention in individuals with dementia, and may have a direct impact on mood and behavior when compared to staff-selected non-meaningful music. The study also supports a person-centered, tailored approach to music-based intervention. Further studies need to assess the impact of personally meaningful music on objective biomarker indicators in different forms of dementia, and on long-term quality of life outcomes. Keywords:

In the instruction of vocal music in Chinese conservatoires of music, two principal methods of singing are imparted: national folk singing and melody singing, which are markedly different from each other in many aspects. Thus, a profound and detailed analysis of the two singing methods is of great significance to exploring singing skills and promoting the development of vocal music in China.

The National Young Singer TV Grand Prix sets up four singing styles, namely, the original eco-singing, bel canto, ethnic singing and pop singing. It is argued in the paper that it is improper to name them this way and four names such as China soil wind singing, the European classical singing, contemporary country and contemporary pop vocal singing style should be adopted instead.

This essay sets forth that association and imagination in singing is a kind of creative form that expresses artistic image in singing, enriches the artistic work and develops singing skills. It emphasizes that the association and imagination is the important factor for deepening singing art and it is the essence for expressing the artistic feeling in singing. It indicates that singing must involve association and imagination and if there isn't association and imagination there isn't singing art.

The paper holds that vocal music is different from singing. It will lead to monotonous singing ways to confuse artistic vocal music and technical singing. The ethno-oriented singing major in conservatories should learn from traditional singing to avoid cultivating stereotyped singers.

In these remarks on Feldman's recent book, Pleasure and the Good Life , I concentrate on Feldman's account of pleasure as attitudinal. I argue that an account of pleasure according to which pleasure need not have any feel is implausible. I suggest that Feldman could avoid this problem but retain the advantages of his attitudinal hedonism by giving an account of the attitude ‘taking pleasure in’ such that the attitude has a feel.

Folk singing and bel canto are two parallel singing arts, with the same laws in sound-producing theories; meanwhile, there exist many differences, such as history, culture, singing skills, singing language, aesthetic orientation, etc. The present article deeply studies and scientifically explains the singing art differences between them, which is of vital importance to the development of folk singing.

In the last decade, different vocalities and songs are classified in all kinds of vocal music competitions, giving the definitions as Bel Canto, National Way of Singing and Method in Popular Singing, which is popularly accepted in the field. But the fact is that the definitions and classifications of the above-mentioned three ways of singing can be further discussed. These three ways of singing have the common features: they share the same vocalizing principle, i.e. the scientific vocalization is applied to the singing. Once the singer masters the correct ways of singing and use it flexibly, the different types and styles of songs can be achieved simultaneously.

For a long time,Guzici and Huaben are generally considered as talking and singing literature by academic community. And the main basis are Weizhi Cui Yingying Shang Melody· Die Lian Hua and Wen Jing Yuan Yang Hui which are both combined by two different works. So either from Guzici and Huaben itself or from other related written records,Guzici is only singing but no talking while Huaben is only talking but no singing. It is right to classify Guzici and Huaben as talking and singing literature, but it is wrong to consider them as talking and singing literature with both talking and singing.

A defective singing ability often entails a feeling of being outside a singing community. This can be experienced as a social disability. If a child, who is a poor singer, is told early by herlhis family, teachers or others that she cannot sing, this
often results in an inhibition for life (Lidman Magnusson, 1994). There are descriptions of music teachers whose negative statements about people's singing ability probably established and strengthened a dysfunction in the singing ability (Palmgren, 1885; Lind, 1897; Reberg, 1993; Rolle, 1914; Torell, 1945). Defective singing ability is described and named in different ways (Welch 1979a). The most
common criteria of a defective singing ability are:
- little ability to follow the melody contour
- little ability to follow the melody rhythm
- singing at very low pitch
- the range in singing is limited to a few tones
The range of the voice also seems to be limited to just a few notes (Lidman Magnusson, 1988, 1994). Terms used are low pitch singers, inaccurate singers, poor pitch singers, weak singers, monotones and onchi singing. I have chosen to
use Dysfunction in the Singing-ability-System (DSS) to describe an undeveloped singing ability. This term stands for inhibition - cancellation, slowing down and ceasing - of several of the mental processes, which are linked to the creation of singing ability. Given this definition, a DSS- diagnosis provides a hint that certain central phases in singing development perhaps have been blocked. My own research indicates that one can suffer from inhibited singing development without being inhibited in a more general way, that is, solely the singing-development may be blocked or damaged. Descriptions of different kinds of undeveloped singing ability are found in a number of articles and dissertations, for instance, Norioka (1992), and Hermann (1983, cited in Bruhn, 1991).
