Abstract:
Here, we report on the prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis and positive skin prick test (SPT) results in relation to respiratory allergic conditions among patients with symptoms of allergies at a respiratory outpatient clinic. A questionnaire survey of symptoms (i.e., asthma-like, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis symptoms) involving 1522 patients was carried out. The responses of 1242 patients indicated that they had allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, rhinitis, or a combination of these conditions, and 869 of these patients underwent SPTs that assessed responses to 40 allergens. Allergic conjunctivitis was found to be very common (40%, 497 out of 1242 patients) among those with symptoms of allergies. Conjunctivitis was slightly more common among women, while rhinitis was more common among men. Patients with both conjunctivitis and rhinitis were more likely to undergo SPTs, and they had a higher rate of positive SPTs. The coexistence of two or more comorbidities increased the risk of having an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergy (based on the SPT results) compared to having each of the conditions alone. In conclusion, allergic conjunctivitis can occur either alone or with asthma and/or rhinitis. It is not always accompanied by rhinitis, but the coexistence of these conditions was the strongest indicator of IgE-mediated allergies. Keywords:

To evaluate serum allergen specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in patients with various types of allergic conjunctivitis.Twenty-five patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), 17 patients with perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC), and 10 patients with vernal conjunctivitis (VC) were included in the study. Specific IgE levels to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp), Dermatophagoides farinae (Df), mixed grass pollens, and animal epithelia were measured using Pharmacia CAP system (Pharmacia Diagnostic AB, Uppsala, Sweden). The percentage of subjects with specific IgE against Dp and Df was statistically higher in VC (30%) compared to PAC (5.9%) and SAC (0%) (p=0.03). Specific IgE against mixed grass pollens was found in 30% of VC and 40% of SAC, whereas 10% of VC and 8% of SAC patients were found to be hypersensitive to animal epithelia.Allergic reaction against house dust mites and pollens was common in VC, whereas specific IgE against grass pollens was remarkable in SAC. IgE levels specific to various antigens might be measured by UNICAP system, which is a rapid and practical technology.

Introduction: Respiratory allergies prevalence in Indonesia, Asia, and the world ranges from 4-10%. Patients with respiratory allergies and other chronic respiratory diseases often experienced deterioration of productivity and concentration ability. This study aims to observe the correlation between respiratory allergy and concentration ability in adults.

The authors present data which suggest that mustard hypersensitivity can result from Isocyanates induced occupational asthma. Isothiocyanates present in mustard spice is probably responsible for this cross-sensitivity. Frequently, food allergies result from skin or respiratory primary contact and sensitization. Some examples are proposed. Distinctive structures and functions of immunological system in cutaneous, respiratory and digestive apparatus, give an explanation for the predominance of skin and respiratory immunological systems to promote hypersensitivity. For the prevention of food allergies, it is very important to avoid excessive skin and respiratory contaminations by allergens in the work and home environments.

Allergy immunotherapy tablets (AIT) have expanded the treatment options for patients suffering from respiratory allergies. Efficacy is established in adults and children for two different commercially available grass AITs. The ALK grass AIT has an efficacy comparable to subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), with a proven disease-modifying effect after treatment completion. Safety profiles favour AIT over SCIT. Studies suggest that tablets in all aspects are superior to sublingual drops. AITs for other allergies including house dust mite and birch and ragweed pollen are in development.
