    Abstract:
We study the Smith-Purcell (SP) radiation emission generated in terahertz (THz) frequency range by an electron beam passing close to the surface of a 3-D quasi-periodic array of metallic slots. When more than one electron beam is used in the SP-based periodic structures, the two or more colors can be generated. In this paper, two-color SP emission of radiation with variable frequency separations has been examined in a proposed quasi-periodic Fibonacci-class structure through 3-D-particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. In spite of using an electron beam instead of implementing a double-electron beam streaming method, in this paper, a new method for successful two-color SP radiation generation in the THz frequency domain is reported in both quasi-spontaneous and quasi-super-radiant regimes. Finally, we show that quasi-superradiance simulations demonstrate the possibility of frequency separation controlling through repetition frequency of applied periodic bunches.

Despite a century of research, the terahertz (1012 Hz) still remains the most immature and underutilized part of the electromagnetic spectrum. This talk will discuss the emerging application of THz imaging and will describe ongoing technology developments which will enable the practical realization of THz imaging. Metamaterials are engineered materials which offer superb electromagnetic performance over naturally occurring materials, and offer great potential to construct novel devices operating in the terahertz frequency regime. Here we experimentally demonstrate metamaterial narrow band filters, perfect absorbing elements for THz imaging, and ultra-fast THz switches. Experiments are supplanted with simulation and theory, thus verifying high performance.

Abstract During the past decade electromagnetic metamaterials have realized many exotic phenomena that are difficult or impossible using naturally occurring materials. It is their resonantly enhanced interaction with electromagnetic waves that underpins their attractive qualities, which are increasingly important in the terahertz frequency range. Passive and active terahertz metamaterials and devices have enabled novel functionality and unprecedented terahertz device performance. These demonstrations prove their potential to address the so‐called terahertz gap, a technology vacuum associated with the deficiency of natural materials with a desirable terahertz response.

One of the most important areas of the present microwaves investigations is development of radiation sources in the sub-Terahertz and Terahertz frequency bands (f ≥ 0.3 THz). Gyrotrons are capable of producing high-power coherent electromagnetic radiation in the millimeter wavelength ranges and looks promising for submillimeter and terahertz bands.

We devised and demonstrated coherent optical computing for single-point terahertz imagery, the physics of which is based on one-to-one mapping of spatial frequency components of an object to broadband terahertz spectrum.
