    Abstract:
Lately I have been thinking and writing about the idea of a teacher’s oeuvre – the notion that over time teachers create a significant body or work that might be compared to that of an artist or composer. I have argued that too often the contributions that teachers make remain invisible, under-valued and unknown in the field of education. This is true certainly when compared to the impact of educational theorists and researchers. Classroom teachers are rarely remembered beyond the local networks in which they have practised. In taking up this opportunity to honor the contribution of Allan Luke as an educational scholar, researcher and theorist, I will argue that, along with his publications, his oeuvre also necessarily includes his work as a teacher and teacher educator in institutional and everyday situations; hence I will refer to my experiences as a student, colleague, collaborator and friend. Being a researcher necessarily involves personal, professional and political dimensions because scholarly personae and milieu extend beyond the university into everyday life.

This article provides a brief overview of Stephen Crook’s scholarly and professional work as a prelude to the articles by Malcolm Waters and Jan Pakulski and Bruce Tranter. His scholarly work particularly focused on the theorization of social differentiation and social order in studies of everyday life. Through the critical appraisal of postmodernist approaches, he developed his own post-foundational radicalist approach that transcended the determinism of unitary meta-narratives, but also avoided relativistic and atheoretical descriptions of the plurality of ‘the everyday’. Yet the everyday relevance of sociological practice was a defining feature of Steve’sweltanschauung, epitomized in his professional service and role as a public intellectual.

In an age of reality television, what is radical about turning our attention to the everyday? This paper proposes a framework for collecting and archiving everyday life, based on the insights offered by theorists both of everyday life and of the archive, as well as by artists who have incorporated everyday life and/or the process of archiving into their work. Everyday Life Studies offers tools for understanding everyday life as overlooked and structured by systems of power, while also holding within it spaces for alternative ways of being that go unnoticed. Recent archive theory has problematized the power of the archive to structure ways of thinking and to determine whose stories will be told. This paper benefits from these discussions and proposes attending to everyday life (even in the act of collecting and archiving) as a project of critique that reveals a lack and indicates the possibilities for change.

Capturing the realm of everyday aesthetics requires a wide net. The defamiliarized familiar certainly is its major ingredient. However, everyday aesthetics contains diverse modes of experience beyond defamiliarziation. The familiar experienced as familiar, often yielding a sense of comforting security and stability while at other times felt as sheer drudgery, also comprises an important dimension of everyday aesthetics. The only aspect of daily life that does not belong to everyday aesthetics is inattentiveness, as it prevents one from having any ‘experience’ to speak of. Everyday aesthetics thus embraces a rich array of different experiences, sometimes by turning the ordinary into something extraordinary, while at other times illuminating the familiar texture of daily life, and at other times exposing instances of negative aesthetics in everyday experience.

Theories of aesthetics have traditionally represented the aesthetic object as a framed, distanced and contemplated individual piece to be appreciated. As such the aesthetic object has mainly been a work of art. This view has been challenged especially by environmental and everyday aesthetics, approaches which bring everyday environments and matters into consideration as possible objects of aesthetic appreciation. In this article I explore recent theories of everyday aesthetics focusing on how they treat the questions concerning ordinarity and attachment with regard to aesthetic experience. In addition, I participate in the ongoing discussion of the nature of everyday aesthetic experience but I do so from a new point of view by introducing a notion of dwelling as a key concept to understanding aesthetic dimensions of our everyday life. The concept of dwelling indicates two different semantic elements of the aesthetic in our everyday existence: that of sensing and perceiving on one hand, and creating on the other. As such it offers a versatile point of departure in viewing our everyday aesthetic life.
