Managing the environmental impacts of air transport operations represents one of the key challenges facing the commercial aviation industry. This chapter identifies the principal sources and types of pollutants and then discusses their resulting environmental impacts in terms of climate change, local air quality, noise, and energy, water and waste. A range of measures that seek to mitigate these impacts are then described and discussed. Case study examples are used to illustrate key points. The chapter concludes by exploring the impact of climate change on aviation and the adaptation measures the industry may need to adopt.

Hydraulic fracturing has been the primary focus of controversy because of surface and subsurface spills and releases, gas migration and groundwater contamination due to faulty well construction, blowouts, and leaks and spills of wastewater and chemicals stored on pad sites. This chapter presents the potential advantages and disadvantages of the hydraulic fracturing process in order that hydraulic fracturing may become a safe and environmentally benign process as possible. The most important requirement for an assessment of the impact of hydraulic fractions projects on the flora and fauna is complete testing of air and water prior to drilling and at regular intervals after drilling has commenced. Trace amounts of chemicals used in the drilling process may affect the health of those working on or living near the wells.
