The application of thermal analysis method to study coal char combustion characteristics were reviewed. Introduced the principle and influencing factor of thermogravimetry and compared the difference between the isothermal thermogravimetry and temperature-programmed thermogravimetry. The results of isothermal thermogravimetry reflected the integral reactivity but the results of temperature-programmed thermogravimetry reflected the change of reactivity during coal combustion which related to the structure and petrographic of char. Kinetics research should eliminate the difussion of the internal and external, otherwise could not get intrinsic kinetics parameter.

The principles of thermogravimetry analysis in the test of textile fibers composition and TG curves analysis were introduced. The pyrolysis processs of onecomponent textile fiber were studied with TG analysis at programmed heating-up speed. Then the differences of TG curves about six kinds of textile fibers were compared and based, on the thermogravimetry curves linear superposition theory of mixtures, a thermogravimetry curve model of two-component mixture had gotten.Eventually an actual thermogravimetry curve of polyester-cotton fabrics verified the thermogravimetry curve model,it proved that thermogravimetry can apply on the quantitative analysis of mixed fibers.

Thermogravimetry, one of the techniques of thermal analysis, was applied to the quality control of drug raw materials as a "Loss on Drying" or for "Water Content Determination". Twenty two kinds of drugs were selected for the comparison of the applicability of thermogravimetry with that of Loss on Drying Test and/or Water Content Determination by the Karl-Fisher method. In all kinds of drugs, it was ascertained that the results with thermogravimetry agreed well with those obtained by Loss on Drying test and/or Karl-Fisher method. In conclusion, thermogravimetry can be used as a substitute for the Loss on Drying test in cases where drug possess a water bound strongly. Further, thermogravimetry can be utilized for some drugs to which the Karl-Fisher method cannot be applied due to their insolubility in Karl-Fisher reagents.

A quantitative understanding of the efficiency of fly ash as a mineral admixture in cement-based materials is essential for its effective utilisation. The present paper is directed towards a specific understanding of the efficiency of fly ash in cementitious materials systems by considering the independency of fly ash and its dependency on the characteristics of the cementitious materials system. A new method of quantitatively evaluating the strength effect of fly ash is proposed, in which two parameters, the strength-effect index and the strengthening factor, are employed to study strength development in fly ash mortars and concretes and to further analyse the influences of water to binder ratio (w/b) and the replacement amount of fly ash on strength. Results indicate that the strength effect of fly ash in mortar systems is different from that in concrete; the strength effect of fly ash varies with both amount of fly ash and w/b. Furthermore, in a concrete system, two different optimal w/b ratios are used to maximise the strength-effect index and the strengthening factor of fly ash, respectively. An optimum amount of fly ash exists for an optimal unit strength-effect index in concrete. It is shown that the method presented in this paper is reasonable and effective in assessing the efficiency of fly ash. This information will strengthen the effective utilisation of fly ash in cementitious materials and design of fly ash concrete.
