Given increasing need and decreasing capacity, the Forest Service outdoor recreation research program must strategize how best to address current and future priorities. The papers compiled here were presented at the National Workshop on Recreation Research and Management held in Portland, Oregon, February 8-10, 2005. Papers are organized around four themes: Understanding Forest Recreation Visitors, Recreation Planning & Monitoring, Recreation Management, and Special Issues in Recreation.

In South East Queensland, a consortium of public sector agencies are developing a “micro-ROS” approach to the recording of outdoor recreation opportunities across a range of public land tenures. The basis of this data gathering process is a landscape classification system that describes individual recreational sites according to their biophysical, social and managerial attributes. This process will allow the current range of combinations of outdoor recreation activity and landscape setting to be recorded and facilitate an activity x setting approach to recreation planning and management. Such a coordinated and uniform approach to the collection of outdoor recreation data has not previously occurred in South East Queensland. This project will significantly contribute to effective and efficient provision of public sector outdoor recreation services, provision of a wide range of high quality outdoor recreation opportunities at a regional level and more effective integration of outdoor recreation in land use decision making.

Abstract The report of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission1 is, for our profession, one of the most important documents to be published this year. It surveys our country's outdoor recreation resources, measures present and likely demands upon them over the next 40 years, and recommends actions to ensure their availability to all Americans of present and future generations. The facts presented and the proposals outlined will have far-reaching implications for our programs of outdoor education and recreation. Of particular interest and value are the strong statements upholding the contributions that outdoor recreation can make to the well-being of the nation and its people. Of some concern is the fact that, while emphasis is accorded the need for research, there is little attention given to the need for education for recreation. The ORRRC report is priority reading for the profession; its contents both deserve and reward study. Reprinted, here are some excerpts from the report which indicate the significance and usefulness of Outdoor Recreation for America.
