Long-term exposure to slightly elevated air temperature alleviates the negative impacts of short term waterlogging stress by altering nitrogen metabolism in cotton leaves

Waterlogging caused by short and severe, or prolonged precipitation can be attributed to global warming.Pumpkin plants are drought-tolerant but not tolerate to waterlogging stress.Under frequent rain and waterlogging conditions, the production of pumpkins is of lower quality, sometimes rotten, and harvest failure occurs in severe cases.Therefore, it is of great significance to assess the waterlogging tolerance mechanism of pumpkin plants.In this study, 10 novel pumpkin varieties from Baimi series were used.The waterlogging tolerance level of pumpkin plants was evaluated by measuring waterlogging tolerance coefficient of biomass and physiological indices using waterlogging stress simulation method.The criteria to evaluate the waterlogging tolerance capacities of pumpkin plants were also explored.Using principal component and membership function analysis, waterlogging tolerance levels of the pumpkin varieties were ranked as follows: Baimi No. 10> Baimi No. 5> Baimi No. 1> Baimi No. 2> Baimi No. 3> Baimi No. 7> Baimi No. 9> Baimi No. 6> Baimi No. 4> Baimi No. 8. Based on the results, Baimi No. 10 was identified with strong waterlogging tolerance and Baimi No. 8 with weak waterlogging tolerance.The responses of malondialdehyde (MDA), proline, key enzymes responsible for anaerobic respiration, and antioxidant enzymes to waterlogging stress were studied in pumpkin plants.The relative expression levels of related genes were determined using real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR technique.The aim of our study was to assess the waterlogging tolerance mechanism of pumpkin plants, thus laying a theoretical foundation for breeding waterlogging-tolerant varieties in the future.After flooding stress treatment, the antioxidant enzyme activities, contents of proline and alcohol dehydrogenases of BaimiNo. 10 and Baimi No. 8 displayed an increase followed by a decrease.All indices of Baimi No. 10 were higher than Baimi No. 8. MDA contents gradually increased, with the content being higher in Baimi No. 8 than Baimi No. 10.The activities of pyruvate decarboxylases (PDCs) in Baimi No. 8 and Baimi No. 10 exhibited a decrease initially, followed by an increase, and then a decrease again.The PDC activity in Baimi No. 8 was generally higher

Abstract Many tree species in the South are adapted to periodic and/or prolonged soil waterlogging. However, artificial disturbances of natural water regimes sometimes cause flooding to occur at abnormal times or the flood water to be deeper and waterlogging longer in duration than is normal. As a consequence, it is difficult for forest managers to predict how a species will respond to such disturbances or to decide how to manage an area where the water regime has been significantly altered. This paper discusses some factors which influence the waterlogging tolerance of tree species, compiles several classification systems, indicates the pertinent literature, and offers a new relative waterlogging-tolerance rating for southern lowland tree species.

In order to screen out strong waterlogging tolerance germplasm resources of Zanthoxylum bungeanum, the growth and waterlogging damage of six Z. bungeanum germplasm materials selected by Sichuan academy of botanical engineering in the early stage were comprehensively evaluated through artificial flooding experiment. The results showed that under waterlogging stress, Chuanzhi-3 still maintained a large stress index of plant height and basal diameter growth, and the waterlogging symptoms appeared only after waterlogging stress for 66 h, with a waterlogging index of only 5.56%, and after waterlogging stress for 96 h, the waterlogging index was 55.56%. The average waterlogging index of each treatment was only 9.63%. The waterlogging symptoms of Chuanzhi-3 were much lighter than other materials, and the waterlogging tolerance was the strongest.

Influence of Subsurface Waterlogging Followed by Surface Waterlogging on Yield and Quality of Cotton
Influence of subsurface waterlogging followed by surface waterlogging on yield and quality of cotton was studied by test-pit experiments at flowering and boll setting stage of cotton. The results showed that the difference was significant in yield among different experimental treatments; waterlogging stress had a certain influence on quality of cotton, but there was only a little difference among treatments. Quantitative analysis by mathematic models showed that the degree of influence from surface waterlogging on the crop was different from that from subsurface waterlogging in continuous progress of surface and subsurface waterlogging. The influence of surface waterlogging on yield of cotton was stronger than that of subsurface waterlogging. The serious the surface waterlogging before subsurface waterlogging, the more loss of yield of cotton.

With frequent appearance of rainstorms and other extreme weather,lots of cities in our country are trapped in deep trouble of waterlogging.How to build an excellent and sound drainage waterlogging prevention system has become an important issue for drainage workers.This paper analyzes the prominent problems existing in the drainage waterlogging prevention system and describes several exploration and practice in response to insufficient drainage waterlogging prevention capacity of Shenzhen with the Houhai River and Futian River as examples based on the historical floods and the current drainage waterlogging prevention system of Shenzhen.Finally,it proposes several ways to improve the drainage waterlogging prevention ability of cities.
