Abstract:
A novel method to guide moving direction of a dog is proposed. By using nature of dogs to pursue moving objects, we aim to develop a suit that guides the direction of movement of dogs. This guiding system is beneficial for search and rescue dogs that also investigate in places where human cannot approach easily. We investigated which light source is suitable for guidance and how to irradiate it. In an indoor experiment, a laser pointer is suitable light source. On the other hands, a dog pursued a high brightness LED light in an outdoor experiment. An optimal position to irradiate the light was estimated to be around 1.0 m front position of a dog. When the light was moving at a constant speed, optimal speeds were 0.5 and 1.0 m/s. When the light was moving with constant acceleration, the effect of acceleration was not remarkable. Keywords:

Two novel LED recycling schemes using either recycling light pipes or recycling "collars" show promise in significantly increasing the brightness of the LED sources. Preliminary experimental data show significant brightness enhancement, especially with a relatively high chip reflectivity and/or high mirror blockage factor. Further improvement may be expected when various system parameters are optimized.

The purpose of this study is to compare the perception of the brightness of light in sitting posture against reclining posture through an experiment. Three factors were controlled in the experiment : the position of light source; the luminance of the source; and the subject's gazing condition in reference to the source. The subjects were allowed to adjust the brightness of the compared light source with the brightness of the standard light source. Then, the ratio of brightness between the compared and the standard source was analyzed at each posture. The followings results were obtained : 1) The relative position in visual field which is most sensitive to brightness changes along with posture. 2) The difference among the ratio of three luminance levels is larger in sitting posture than reclining posture. 3) Peripheral visual field is perceived as being more brightly than the central visual regardless of position, luminance of light sources and subject's posture.

Abstract A New Data Projector (Model name is VPL‐FHZ55) has released with highest brightness in August 2013. This projector has new light source technology with Blue Laser Diode and Yellow Phosphor Wheel that achieved 4000lm brightness with 0.76“ 3LCD WUXGA panel system. Projector specification and white light source technology to realize the better specification than conventional projector is described in this paper.

LED-based light sources utilizing novel light-recycling cavities have been developed that have small output etendue. A portion of the light emitted by the LED source is recycled back to the LEDs to enhance both the average brightness of the source and the brightness of the cavity output. Experimentally, we have achieved brightness enhancement factors of approximately 1.3x–2.0x.

Which lighting attributes determine the brightness of a room space? We considered the perceived strength of the light source and the perceived amount of light in the space as potential determinants. We examined the relations between the actual brightness of the space and these two perceptions. In the first experiment, subjects evaluated the strength of the light source and the amount of light in the space using reference matching method. The results were consistent among the subjects, indicating they judged each of the two lighting attributes by some common criteria. In the second experiment, the brightness of the space, the strength of the light source, and the amount of light in the space of a model box were evaluated using the magnitude estimation method under various illumination conditions. We found that the brightness of the space was closely correlated with the perceived amount of light but not with the perceived strength of the light source. These results should prove useful in constructing a model for quantitatively estimating the brightness of a space.

Proposed scales of apparent brightness are introduced, which were reported by S. S. Stevens and R. G. Hopkinson. Procedures for designing visual environment were briefly stated on the basis of the scales of apparent brightness. The present authors propose following further studies on the application of apparent brightness to illuminating engineering: 1) Consideration of effect of brightness contrast and constancy in addition to adaptation on prediction of apparent brightness. 2) Relations between visual functions and apparent brightness. 3) Specification of pleasant or comfort distribution of apparent brightness in visual environment. 4) Specification of the design procedure of visual environment based on apparent brightness for easier use. 5) Necessity to use apparent brightness meter, which is similar to the color appearance meter desingned by R. W. G. Hunt. 6) Necessity of interim international unification of scales of apparent brightness. 7) Necessity to establish the system to appraise visual environment subjectively, which woluld calrify the relation between the pleasantness (or comfortability) and apparent brightness.

Because the changing range of environmental brightness is wide, brightness of LED CMS(Changing Message Sign) should be adjusted according to the changes of environmental brightness in order to guarantee that the displayed information could be clear under different lumina. This paper will discuss brightness adjusting design for LED CMS from three different angles: visual characteristics of eyes, the relationship between luminescence brightness and environmental brightness and the ways of brightness adjusting, and give final testing results.
