Samples of Potamageton crispus L. were collected in different growing seasons of the plants and the species composition and quantitative feature of periphytic algae on them were investigated. Altogether 68 species of periphytic algae were found, involving 50 genera. The algae were categorized in the phyla of Bacillariphyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Euglenophyta, Xanthophyta and Cryptophyta. The common dominant species were in Bacillariphyta and Chlorophyta. P. crispus L and the periphytic algae on it restricted each other's growth. The density and biomass of the periphytic algae showed a striking seasonal variation with the growth of P. crispus.

ABSTRACT Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was found to be the principle biogenic sulfur compound in a freshwater environment. Endemic and non‐endemic algae were cultured under axenic and nonaxenic conditions in defined media. Sulfur gas analysis of culture fluids indicated that members of the Cyanophyta were probable sources of DMS whereas representatives of the divisions Chlorophyta, Xanthophyta and Bacillariophyta apparently did not produce this compound. Comparison of gaseous contents of young and old nonaxenic cultures of filamentous algae in the divisions Chlorophyta and Xanthophyta showed DMS occurred only in aged cultures and was probably produced by bacteria utilizing substances from senescent algal cells. Data suggest that the composition of the algal community determines whether DMS is algal and/or bacterial in origin.

A total of 46 different species of marine algae was collected in Guatemala, 11 species of the Cyanophyta, 11 Chlorophyta, 1 Phaeophyta, and 23 Rhodophyta. Only Enteromorpha flexuosa and Caloglossa leprieurii were common to both coasts. A number of economically valuable phycocolloid algae were found on the Caribbean coast.

Abstract Zinc has definitely been established to be required for the growth of both higher plants and algae, but it can act either in a stimulatory mode or in an inhibitory one, depending on its level of availability. A variety of environmental factors are known to modify the toxicity of zinc in water on algae. It has been observed that algae differ in their tolerance to zinc. It is well known that algae can accumulate zinc or other metals from water, producing an internal concentration greater than in their surroundings. The modes of accumulation and concentration factors are given.

Dianshan Lake is the largest lake in the Shanghai suburbs and also one of the most important fresh water sources for Shanghai. To investigate the growth and predominant genera of algae in the lake, water samples were collected during the summer and autumn of 2002. The number of algae cells was counted, each algae genus was identified, and the percentage of each major taxa was calculated. The number of algae cells was affected with alternation of seasons and ranged between 2.27 × 106 l− 1 and 4.24 × 106 l− 1. The percentage of Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta ranged from 20 to about 73% and 21 to about 65%, respectively. The growth and population of Bacillariophyta and Euglenophyta were less than 20% during the sampling period. The change of Cyanophyta population resembled that of the total algae temporally. Cyanophyta reached 50% in the blue-green algae population; the impending water bloom posed a risk to health. Blue-green algae were the dominant algae in Dianshan Lake during the summer and autumn.

Algal communities in Yueya Lake in Nanjing City were investigated during the period from October 2012 to January 2013.More than 160 samples of aquatic algae were collected from six typical sampling sites,and these samples were observed,identified,and statistically analyzed,in order to study the floral compositions and temporal and spatial distributions of algae in the lake.The results show that there are 57 taxa of algae belonging to eight divisions,29 families,and 57 genera,and they are mostly composed of Cyanophyta,Bacillariophyta,and Chlorophyta( accounting for 47.37% of the total).There are twelve dominant taxa of algae in the lake and six of them are bloom species.The algae have the highest species abundance and the highest density in October.As the temperature declines,the species abundance and density begin to decrease.Analysis of the distribution patterns of the algae and pollution-indicating algae in the lake shows that the waters of the Yueya Lake have been polluted to a certain extent.
