Abstract The primary goal of this study was to examine attachment style effects on self-disclosure, trust, satisfaction, and uncertainty levels of individuals in long-distance romantic relationships (LDRRs) who utilise technologically mediated communication channels as a primary means of daily interaction with their romantic partners. Participants ( N = 211) from 27 countries who maintained committed romantic relationships ( M = 3 years) with geographical separation ( M = 1042 miles, Mdn = 160 miles) were surveyed. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), 7 of the 8 hypotheses were supported, showing that attachment style and self-disclosure predict relational uncertainty, trust, and relational satisfaction. In examining the distinctions between attachment styles (i.e., secure, preoccupied, fearful-avoidant, and dismissive) three models were developed and confirmed with good fit. The implications of the study suggest how both attachment style and self-disclosure influence the overall success of LDRRs.

Although the echoes of romance and adventure in Conrad's work have long been recognised and commented upon, what is often not examined is what exactiy Conrad is doing with the romance elements of his writing.1 What are die values of this romance tradition out of which some of Conrad's work seems to be emerging?2 We know from Conrad himself, and from Ford Madox Ford, that he admired the early romances of Fenimore Cooper and Captain Marryat.3 This paper will explore some of the motifs employed by Conrad in his characterisation of Willems in An Outcast of the Islands (1896). My purpose is to show that Conrad makes conscious use of the late nineteenth-century romance and adventure tradition as exemplified by the likes of G. A. Henty, H. Rider Haggard and, to some extent, Rudyard Kipling. Such an analysis will reveal the hollowness of many of the values of the romance when applied to actual late nineteenth-century lives. The genre of adventurous romance for boys becomes the means through which Conrad ironises and undermines what Robert Hampson calls the

The Historical Romance explores the ways in which romance authors seek to represent our fantasies of life in the past. Examining how the cut-and-thrust swashbucklers of the 1930s gave way to female-orientated romances, Helen Hughes takes a comprehensive look at how romance authors have dealt with the turbulent question of female independence, and how traditional attitudes towards love, marriage and women's sexuality have been approached in more recent texts. Hughes also charts the ways in which the marketing of romance has developed, with the eventual explosion of the mass market and the blockbusting family sagas of the eighties. The Historical Romance unravels the formulaic and mythical nature of historical romance to provide a fascinating study of this highly popular genre.

This article examines the underlying cognitive structures, specifically visual and event schemata, and the meanings associated with these structures that form children's cultural models, or what they think of as typical and ideal in romance. The study shows that long before it translates into actual behavior, children's romantic imagination is shaped by the content and forms that romance assumes in the postmodern nexus of media and the market. Through 183 interviews with children ages 8 to 17, we explore how children's imagined vision of romance moves from one molded by the media, associating romance with luxury and leisure consumption, to one characterized by a tension between what media have promised them and their growning understanding of the complexities of love.
