    Abstract:
We use R-matrix method to study the near threshold (17.5eV-20eV) photoionization of neutral fluorine atom and obtain total photoionization cross sections in 3P to 1D range. The theoretical calculation results fit the experimental results better after we consider core-valence electron correlation.

Chemists typically use photoionization and photoionization mass spectroscopy for two types of experiments. In one case, the goal is measurement of thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties. In the other case, reaction mechanisms and kinetics are probed; photoionization is used for selective identification of key species in a complex reacting mixture. The utility of photoionization stems from the ability to tie thermodynamic values to accurately measured wavelengths and the sensitivity of ion (or electron) detection.

A vacuum ultraviolet monochromator and a quadrupole mass spectrometer have been combined with the differential pumping systems, since hydrogen, helium and argon gases were used as the carrier gas for the photon source. The photoionization efficiency curves were observed by the hydrogen many-line spectrum. The photoionization efficiency curves for the parent and the fragment ions of (CH3)2 CO have been measured with the photon band width of 0.9Å. For the parent ion, autoionization for super-excited states was first observed in the threshold region of the photoionization.

The probabilities of photoionization of hydrogen molecular ion by ultrashort laser field were evaluated on base of earlier developed trajectory method. The results are obtained in a wide range of field magnitudes up to superatomic fields approaching relativistic intensities. In a weak field gained results are in good agreement with the data obtained by other methods. In a strong field the photoionization probability behaviour resembles some features of the so called stabilization effect in atoms.

Photoionization mass spectrometry experiments, performed on an extensive size range of aluminum clusters produced by laser vaporization technique, are reported. Ionization potential values are deduced from individual photoionization efficiency curves for the smaller AlN clusters (N=36–112). Our results confirm and complete those previously published. The mass spectra of larger clusters (N≊250–1400) reveal a regular signal oscillation. Several additional experiments give proof that this striking pattern originates from size-dependent ionization threshold effects. This structure exhibits exact periodicity as a function of N1/3 or Ne1/3 (Ne the number of valence electrons).
