The experiment entitled “Studies on effect of age of rootstock and scion on success, survival and growth of brinjal grafts” was carried out in 2018-19 to standardize the age of scion and rootstock seedlings for grafting which consists of nine treatment combinations viz.T1: 20 days old scion grafted on 20 days old rootstock, T2: 25 days old scion grafted on 20 days old rootstock, T3: 30 days old scion grafted on 20 days old rootstock, T4: 20 days old scion grafted on 25 days old rootstock, T5: 25 days old scion grafted on 25 days old rootstock, T6: 30 days old scion grafted on 25 days old rootstock, T7: 20 days old scion grafted on 30 days old rootstock, T8: 25 days old scion grafted on 30 days old rootstock, T9: 30 days old scion grafted on 30 days old rootstock and each treatment was replicated thrice in Randomized Block Design.The brinjal cultivar Swarn Pratibha was used as rootstock and Kali-rawai was used as scion. Less number of days (7.60) were required for graft union in T1 whereas highest number of days (8.20) were required for graft union in T6. Highest grafting survival (75.33%) at 30 DAG was observed in treatment T5 whereas lowest grafting survival (70.67%) at 30 DAG was observed in treatment T3 and T7.

SummaryThe contributions by scion and by rootstock to a number of aspects of the growth and form of four-year-old deblossomed compound trees have illustrated that major contrasts may occur between the influence of a given clone when present as a scion to that when present as a rootstock. Nevertheless, contributions by scion and by rootstock, assessed upon all combinations as scion and as rootstock of all clones in the experiment, are largely additive, mean squares for scion/rootstock interaction being often statistically insignificant or, relatively, quite unimportant. Such conclusions arise, with the clones examined, in the cases of apple, quince and cherry.

Abstract Background: Rootstock genotype determines multiple aspects of the scion development, including the scion three-dimensional structure, or tree architecture. Thus, rootstock choice is an important factor in the establishment of new almond ( Prunus amygdalus (L.) Batsch, syn P. dulcis (Mill.)) planting systems, which demand cultivars whose vigor and shape adapt to these new requirements. However, if the rootstock genotype is able to alter scion development, it is likely that the scion genotype affects the rootstock performance. Results: We carried out a transcriptomic analysis of the scion/rootstock interaction in young trees, focusing on the scion effect in the rootstock molecular response. Two commercial almond cultivars were grafted onto two hybrid rootstocks, resulting in four combinations, whose gene expression in both scion and rootstock tissue was analyzed via RNA-Seq. We observed that, in fact, the scion genotype has an impact on the rootstock expression profile, affecting the expression of genes associated with hormonal regulation, root development and light signaling. Conclusions: Scion/rootstock communication has a pivotal role in the development of both scion and rootstock, accentuating the importance of a correct choice when establishing new almond orchards.

In this study, graft compatibility between almond cultivar Lauranne and almond seedling and Rootpac R, Rootpac 90, Rootpac 70 and Rootpac 40 clonal rootstocks was anatomically investigated. The anatomical analysis of scion/ rootstock combinations was performed by taking cross sections for 30 days and 12 months after T-budding in June, 2017. It was determined that, 30 days after grafting, the callus cells developed but cambial continuity has not occurred between the rootstock and scion tissues in all scion/rootstock combinations. 12 months after grafting, cambial relation was established, vascular differentiation was observed, regular parenchymatic tissue properties and scleroid (petrosal cell) cells and sclerenchyma bundles were seen in the graft union. There was no problem in terms of rootstock- scion compatibility in Lauranne almond cultivar which was grafted on almond seedling and some Rootpac clonal rootstocks.

The fruit cultivars generally do not come true to type when raised from seed and must, therefore, be propagated through vegetative methods. Majority of them are difficult to establish on their own roots and are normally budded or grafted as scions either on seedling or on vegetatively raised clonal rootstocks. In the composite tree, the two components, i.e. the rootstock and the scion, because of their different genetic constitution, exert a great degree of influence on each other affecting their performance throughout their life period. The main characteristics of rootstock-scion inter-relations have become apparent from the earlier studies and it is well established that rootstock influence on the scion is much greater as compared to the scion influence on rootstock.

In the nursery new rootstock for maiden apple tree was compared with standard root- stocks: M-9, P-2, M-26. The number of the obtained maiden apple trees of 'Delikates' on new rootstock was higher than on P-2 and M-9 rootstocks but lower than on M-26. There were no differences in this parameter between the examined rootstocks in case of 'Elstar' cultivar. The height of maiden apple trees of 'Delikates' and 'Elstar' on new rootstock was similar to the height on M-9. Maiden apple trees on new rootstock were significantly thicker than the ones obtained on other rootstocks. The average sum of the length of long shoots and their number on one maiden tree for the new observed rootstock was radically bigger than on M-9 and M-26 rootstocks. The consistency of the maiden apple trees with the Polish Rules did not differ significantly for all examined rootstocks.
