Within the higher education communities, adjunct instructors play a vital role in nontraditional programs that are fully online. Because of the importance of these types of instructors, it is also essential that candidates are fully prepared to apply, interview, and research a position that will support them and their growth as adjunct instructors online. In addition, adjunct instructors need to understand the non-traditional learner within these online programs through knowledge of what makes a “non-traditional” student and how to support them through the possible challenges they face as students. In the end, understanding the role, the process of selecting an adjunct, and the support systems in place to support the adjunct growth and student's growth, will not make the adjunct successful but the students they work with successful too.

Hundreds of adjunct faculty in four-year colleges and universities teach over 45% of the courses, especially in the general education programs, but few institutions have chosen to construct adjunct faculty development programs that integrate these faculty into the instructional community. Metropolitan State College of Denver, recipient of a Title HI grant to build an adjunct development program received a TIA-CREF Hesburgh Award of Excellence in 2001 for its innovative adjunct support activities. This chapter articulates the features of this successful program and its effect on the adjunct faculty cohort at the college.

Abstract The material conditions in which most writing classes are taught-by an adjunct, who has little or no job security, is poorly compensated, and is isolated from colleagues-cannot be conceptualized as merely an "adjunct problem." This so-called "adjunct problem" cannot be separated from the ethics of the university and its faculty, from the principles of the discipline and its pedagogies, or from the responsibility of this particular adjunct and her future career decisions.

Adjunct aids are instructional interventions inserted in textbooks in view of supporting learners to process the information. Different types of adjunct aids are assumed to support different cognitive processes. Research on adjunct aids has focussed on the learning effects of single types of adjunct aids. In this study, the learning effects of combinations of adjunct aids are studied. After completing a pre-test, 255 students studied a text presented on 21 separate computer screens in one of eight conditions. Their use of the adjunct aids was logged. After studying the text, a post-test was administered. Results show no impact of conditions on either knowledge or transfer items. However, when the use of the adjunct aids is considered, it is shown that this result can be explained by referring to the use of the aids at least for knowledge items.

The use of adjunct faculty has increased exponentially in the past decade. It is essential that resources to retain adjuncts are identified and made available to adjunct faculty. To identify the appropriate factors, it is essential to discover what nursing adjunct instructors perceive to be the factors of importance to their work role. The purpose of the article was to determine the perceived factors of importance and availability of work role needs of adjunct faculty.A quantitative, exploratory design was developed, using an anonymous online Adjunct Instructor Likert Scale Survey. The sample included participating adjunct instructors from a possible total of 91 midsized, midwestern baccalaureate nursing programs.Fourteen of 18 pairs were significantly different (p < .05) in adjunct perception.Using these data, colleges of nursing may be able to identify adjunct work factors in that can be improved to increase adjunct faculty recruitment, satisfaction, and retention. The article discusses an upper division capstone class in Sociology focused on the adjunct experience, premised on the idea that students and their families could be important allies in adjunct struggles if they knew more about the conditions and remuneration of this new faculty majority. Students carried out survey research with other students in order to ascertain their knowledge about adjuncts and interviews with adjunct volunteers. The article discusses the class and results.
