Abstract:
Air pollution has become an urgent issue that affecting public health and people’s daily life in China. Social media as potential air quality sensors to surveil air pollution is emphasized recently. In this research, we picked up a case-2013 Eastern China smog and focused on two of the most popular Chinese microblog platforms Sina Weibo and Tencent Weibo. The purpose of this study is to determine whether social media can be capable to be used as ‘sensors’ to monitor air pollution in China and to provide an innovative model for air pollution detection through social media. Based on that, we propose our research question, how a salient change of air quality expressed on social media discussions to reflect the extent of air pollution. Hence, our research (1) determine the correlation between the volume of air quality-related messages and observed Air quality index (AQI) with the help of time series analysis model; (2) investigate further the impact of a salient change of air quality on the relationship between the people’s subjective perceptions regarding to air pollution released on the Weibo and the extent of air pollution through a co-word network analysis model. Our study illustrates that the discussions on social media about air quality reflect the level of air pollution when the air quality changes saliently. (Less)Keywords:

Severe air pollution problems have led to a rise in the Chinese public’s concern, and it is necessary to use monitoring stations to monitor and evaluate pollutant levels. However, monitoring stations are limited, and the public is everywhere. It is also essential to understand the public’s awareness and behavioral response to air pollution. Air pollution complaint data can more directly reflect the public’s real air quality perception than social media data. Therefore, based on air pollution complaint data and sentiment analysis, we proposed a new air pollution perception index (APPI) in this paper. Firstly, we constructed the emotional dictionary for air pollution and used sentiment analysis to calculate public complaints’ emotional intensity. Secondly, we used the piecewise function to obtain the APPI based on the complaint Kernel density and complaint emotion Kriging interpolation, and we further analyzed the change of center of gravity of the APPI. Finally, we used the proposed APPI to examine the 2012 to 2017 air pollution complaint data in Shandong Province, China. The results were verified by the POI (points of interest) data and word cloud analysis. The results show that: (1) the statistical analysis and spatial distribution of air pollution complaint density and public complaint emotion intensity are not entirely consistent. The proposed APPI can more reasonably evaluate the public perception of air pollution. (2) The public perception of air pollution tends to the southwest of Shandong Province, while coastal cities are relatively weak. (3) The content of public complaints about air pollution mainly focuses on the exhaust emissions of enterprises. Moreover, the more enterprises gather in inland cities, the public perception of air pollution is stronger.

Although air pollution is one of the most significant environmental factors posing a threat to human health worldwide, air quality data are scarce or not easily accessible in most European countries. The current work aims to develop a centralized air quality data hub that enables citizens to contribute to air quality monitoring. In this work, data from official air quality monitoring stations are combined with air pollution estimates from sky-depicting photos and from low-cost sensing devices that citizens build on their own so that citizens receive improved information about the quality of the air they breathe. Additionally, a data fusion algorithm merges air quality information from various sources to provide information in areas where no air quality measurements exist.

Air quality in urban areas continues to represent a major concern, taking into account the impact of pollution on environment and human health. Air quality study involves researchers of several scientific disciplines and requires the development of theoretical, practical and methodological concepts, always new, for understanding, controlling and combating urban air pollution. Together with monitoring, modeling air pollution is a very important tool in the management of air quality. It enables efficient verification in order to reduce emissions and make prediction of pollution levels associated with changes in urban infrastructure.

The lack of a coherent policy to address seasonal air pollution in Northeast Asia is partly due to the complexity of the issue—that it is both domestic and transboundary in nature—and partly due to media frames that emerge in response to seasonal fluctuations. To provide a better understanding of these factors as well as their potential impact on public opinion and behavior, this paper claims that the varying narratives conveyed in the Korean media have an impact on and provide a basis for assessing Koreans' opinions about the problem of air pollution, both transboundary and domestically. Invoking the extant literature that connects media effects with public opinion about air pollution, the analysis proceeds in two stages. First, based on an analysis of Yonhap News Agency reporting, it is shown that the emerging media-based frames are dominated by China and health-related content. Second, and in light of these frames, a survey is conducted of a representative sample of Seoul Metropolitan Area residents to determine how attention to the air pollution issue drives attitudes and, in turn, how such attitudes may be associated with specific pollution-reduction actions. Consistent with the media-based frames, it is shown that one's attentiveness to the air pollution issue increases the importance one places on reducing Korea's air pollution. Knowledge about air pollution also decreases one's satisfaction with both Korea's and China's air pollution-reduction efforts. Knowledge about air pollution does not impact on Koreans' decision to minimize exposure to air pollution outdoors (by wearing masks) or indoors (by using air purifiers), but it does increase the likelihood that one will simply stay indoors, indicating that health concerns are paramount for the average citizen.

Many areas in China, e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, have been suffering from severe air pollution problem in recent years. The haze has jeopardized people's health and aroused deep concern from the public. To understand residents concerns better and leverage the power of the crowd, the government encourages organizations and individuals to participate in environmental protection activities. In this paper, we describe a decision supporting system with a set of algorithms implemented to extract insights from fused physical data (Air Quality Index, AQI) and social data (social buzz). The system provides insights for the government to closely improve its public services to curb the air pollution, including understanding the correlation between AQI and residents sentiment, spot and remove illegal sources of air pollution.

Abstract Air pollution is a worldwide environmental issue and generates different types of health problem, especially in major developing countries. In the past years, the increasing trend of air pollution in metropoles around the world has turned this into a serious challenge, and its negative impacts have developed in different social, environmental and economic fields. Undoubtedly, one of the negative and serious impacts is the increasing number of patients due to air pollution. This research aims to evaluate the effects of air pollution on people's health using a systematic analysis approach. Dynamic hypotheses along with causal and state flow diagrams have been made for this purpose. Results of the proposed model suggest that developing public transportation and landscapes, as well as building culture in order to reduce the use of personal automobiles could be efficient dynamic policies for escaping the air pollution crisis and subsequently reducing the number of patients caused by it.
