Dance socioculture encourages dancers to perform through pain and injury and influences whether dancers will take time off in the event of an injury. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact dancers' mind-set and enculturation had on their decision to continue to train and perform through injury. Fifteen trained dancers (5 males and 10 females), age 27.7±14.25 years, completed a survey to determine the dancers' perceptions of injury and rehabilitation decisions post-injury. Findings indicate that enculturated perceptions may play a significant role in dancers' response to injury.

147 Athletes have special nutritional needs that vary with sex, age, body composition and by the type, intensity, frequency and duration of the physical exercise. However the diet of certain groups of athletes such as ballet dancers and gymnasts are inadequate due to overly restrictive habits as a consequence of their obsession with losing or maintaining a low body weight. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the nutritional status of 3 groups of young females (13-17 years): 1) 10 elite gymnasts (GYM) (48 h/wk of physical exercise); 2) 14 ballet dancers (BD) (20-25 h/wk of physical exercise) and 3) 23 volunteer students (C) (<2 h/wk of physical exercise). Energy intake and anthropometric parameters (BMI, IBW% as well as triceps and subscapular skinfolds), body composition (measurement of fat mass and body fat percentage) were tested. The calorie intake of C was similar to the recommended intake mean values. However, both GYM and BD consumed significantly lower hypocaloric diets (mean=1267-1555 kcal), than C. Regarding anthropometry, BMI and IBW % were significantly lower in GYM than in the other two groups. In addition, triceps and subscapular thickness, fat mass and body fat percentage were significantly lower in GYM and BD groups in comparison with C, GYM reaching the lowest values. According to the dietary and anthropometry parameters tested, GYM and BD might suffer from malnutrition and energy intake should be modified in these sportwomen groups in order to avoid possible situations of malnutrition. 236 Dietary intake in athletes has been shown to be inadequate due to overly restrictive habits and an obsession with losing or maintaining body weight. Long-term competition, training and stress induce immunological changes, and besides, immunological assessment is being used as a useful tool to evaluate the nutritional status. Aim: To evaluate and compare the nutricional status of 3 differents groups of young females (age: 13-17 yr): 1) 10 elite gymnasts (48 h/wk) (GYM): 2) 14 ballet dancers (20-25 h/wk) (BD) and 3) 50 students (physical exercise < 2 h/wk) (C). Methods:Anthropometry [height, weight, body mass index (BMI)], dietary intake and cell-mediated immunity [total leukocyte, lymphocyte and CD3, CD4, and CD8 lymphocyte subset counts, and the response to a delayed hypersensitivity skin test (DHST)]. Results: Weight and BMI were significantly lower in GYM than in BD and C. The caloric intake was lower in GYM and BD than in C; however GYM showed a higher protein percentage together with a lower lipid percentage than in BD and C. In addition, carbohydrate percentage was lower in GYM than in C. Total leukocyte, lymphocyte and CD3, CD4 and CD8 lymphocyte subset counts were lower in BD and GYM than in C, although leukocyte and CD3 cell levels were higher in GYM than in BD. The response to DHST was depleted both in GYM and in BD in comparison with C. Conclusion: According to the immunological parameters tested, both GYM and BD might suffer from malnutrition, although BD seems to show the most impaired nutritional status, mainly due to their restricted diet.
