    Abstract:
Mobile devices are increasingly being used to access Web content but lack the resources for proper presentation to the user. To address this problem, content is typically adapted to be more suitable for a mobile environment. Community-driven adaptation (CDA) is a novel approach to automatic content adaptation for mobile devices that adapts content based on feedback from users. CDA groups users into communities based on common characteristics, and assumes that users of the same community have similar adaptation requirements. CDA learns how to adapt content by observing how members of a community alter adapted content to make it more useful to them. Experiments that consider the idealized case, where all users perform the same task, show that CDA can reduce wastage of network bandwidth by up to 90% and requires less user interaction to correct bad adaptation decisions compared with existing approaches to automatic content adaptation.

Mobile content adaptation is a technology of effectively representing the contents originally built for the desktop PC on wireless mobile devices. Previous approaches for Web content adaptation are mostly device-dependent. Also, the content transformation to suit to a smaller device is done manually. As a result, the user has difficulty in selecting relevant information from a heavy volume of contents since the context information related to the content is not provided. To resolve these problems, this paper proposes an enhanced method of Web content adaptation for mobile devices. In our system, the process of Web content adaptation consists of 4 stages including block filtering, block title extraction, block content summarization, and personalization through learning. As a result of learning, personalization is realized by showing the information for the relevant block at the top of the content list

While HTML will continue to be used to develop Web content, how to effectively and efficiently transform HTML-based content automatically into formats suitable for mobile devices remains a challenge. In this paper, we introduce a concept of coherence set and propose an algorithm to automatically identify and detect coherence sets based on quantified similarity between adjacent presentation groups. Experimental results demonstrate that our method enhances Web content analysis and adaptation on the mobile Internet.

In mobile environment, because of the handheld devices' capability limitation and diversity, content adaptation becomes an essential technology for web services. In this paper, adaptation for handheld device 's web access is studied. For solving the JSP resource-wrapping problem, a document type definition (DTD) is given for device independent page markup language (DIML)[1]. The problem for collecting the properties and the environment context of devices is solved by defining DTK! (Device logical traits modeling). Finally we describe the adaptation- processing algorithm by using DIML and DTM, and solve the problem for adaptation of massive HTMI pages of Java-based web servers.

Content adaptation is an attractive solution for the ever growing desktop based Web content delivered to the user via heterogeneous devices, in order to provide acceptable experience while surfing the Web. Bridging the mismatch between the rich content and the user device's resources (display, processing, navigation, network bandwidth, media support) without user intervention requires a proactive behavior. While content adaptation poses multitude of benefits, without proper strategies, adaptation will not be truly optimized. There have been many projects focused on content adaptation that have been designed with different goals and approaches. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive classification for content adaptation system. The classification is used to group the approaches applied in the implementation of existing content adaptation system. Survey on some content adaptation systems also been provided. We also present the research spectrum in content adaptation and discuss the challenges.

This paper presents our design and development of a context-driven content adaptation planner, which dynamically transforms requested Web content into a proper format conforming to receiving contexts (e.g., access condition, network connection, and receiving device). Aiming to establish a semantic foundation for content adaptation, we apply description logics (DLs) to formally define context profiles and requirements and automate content adaptation decision. In addition, the computational overhead caused by content adaptation can be moderately decreased through the reduction of the size of adapted content.

In this paper, a content adapter architecture for learning system is presented. Normally, most e-learning systems are designed for web browsers. In order to be adapted for others consumers, like mobile devices, some constraints are introduced due to the different characteristics and constraints of these devices, like different screen dimensions, that would require some form of adaptation. This adaptation task can consume time and resources, since most solutions resolve it by creating different resources for different devices. In this work, a different approach is used, the content is adapted in a middle layer (in a non intrusive way), between the content provider and the device. The adaptation is done with the use of templates, which describes how the content must be adapted. This architecture consist in a backend server and a front end client. Also, the server is responsible for maintaining a version control of the content, message services, statics collections, among other features. While the client provides a thin layer, build as a native web application, which can provides interaction with the devices features and also a cache system for avoiding data transfers and also providing an offline content.

This paper presents a Content Adapter Architecture (CAA) for Content Management Systems (CMSs). A CMS is a software application that maintains and keeps track of every piece of content of a website. In the past, CMS has been mainly used in developing websites and portals for desktop PCs. For mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets, the web content developed for PCs needs to be adapted in order to provide the best possible user experience due to different characteristics and constraints such as screen dimensions. This adaptation task can be time consuming and resource intensive. Most solutions resolve it by creating different resources or CMS plugins for different devices. This paper proposes a novel approach to adapt CMS content in a non-intrusive way, through the use of templates which specify how the content should be adapted. The CAA consists of a backend server and a front end client. The server is responsible for the adaptation and provides version control of content, amongst other features. The client, built as a web application, is a thin layer which provides interaction with the device features, and acts as a cache system to reduce data transfer.

In the mobile Internet, users generally work with handheld devices with limited computing power and small screens. Their access conditions also change frequently. In this paper, we present a novel method supporting intelligent content adaptation to better suit handheld devices. The underpinning is a unit of information (UOI)– based content adaptation method, which automatically detects semantic relationships among the components of Web contents and then reorganizes page layout to fit handheld devices based on identified UOIs. Experimental results demonstrate that our method enables more sensitive content adaptation.
