The governing partial differential equation for the distribution of orientations is obtained for nematic liquid crystals. The boundary condition for orientation at the surface of the container depends on the type of surface and the type of liquid crystal. Two extreme cases, orientation either parallel or perpendicular to the surface, have been solved and the orientational effects due to magnetic field is determined.

Abstract Selective angle electroluminescence of violet light with a peak wavelength of 405 nm from light‐emitting diodes based on nanostructured p‐GaN/ZnO heterojunctions is reported. The fabrication of well‐aligned nanobottles with excellent crystalline quality is achieved by chemical vapor deposition at temperatures as low as 450 °C with a specially designed upside‐down arrangement of substrate configuration. Selective angle light sources are essential in our daily life. With the geometry of the nanobottle waveguides, it is very easy to realize such a practical application. Therefore, the discovery reported here should be very useful for the future development of many unique optoelectronic devices.

The effect of noise on the average orientation imposed by the surface treatment on the bulk properties of a nematic liquid crystal is evaluated. The general solution of the elastic problem in terms of propagators is given. The analysis shows that a nonuniform easy axis requires a careful experimental determination of the anchoring energy, detected by means of optical methods. Several particular cases are analyzed in the strong- and weak-anchoring situations.

The orientation of the nematic director field under the action of an external time‐dependent field is theoretically investigated as a mixed Dirichlet–Neumann boundary‐value problem. This mathematical problem represents the situation in which a nematic liquid crystal sample is limited by two inhomogeneous flat surfaces, separated by a distance d, on which the anchoring is weak. By considering the one‐constant approximation and a parabolic approximation for the surface energy, the initial conditions and boundary‐value problem for the profile of the tilt angle can be analytically solved even in the case in which the surfaces are not identical, which represents the more general situation. The results are valid for small deviations from the homeotropic orientation and for θ−Θ≪1, where θ is the actual tilt angle and Θ characterizes the easy direction imposed by the surface, and can be relevant to investigation of the molecular orientation in a nematic cell submitted to a small external voltage.

Abstract:Light sources with wavelengths in the green region are very important for a wide gamut of applications,including solid-state lighting,visible light communications,agriculture,optogenet• ics,and so on.Compared to blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs),the fabrication of high-performance low-dimensional green LED has long been limited by"Green gap"and"Efficiency droop" .In this work,a kind of green LED composed of p-type InGaN layers and a single Ga doped ZnO microwire (ZnO∶Ga MW)was designed.The experiment results indicated that this LED device had a central wavelength located at 540 nm and a linewidth of about 32 nm.Most important of all,increasing the operating current at high level,no noticeable variations in the electroluminescence characteristics and relative external quantum efficiency(REQE)could be observed.Additionally,a cladding of Au nanofilm was introduced on the surface of microwire to optimize the interface quality of n-ZnO∶Ga MW/p-InGaN heterojunction,resulting in the better uniform contact between ZnO∶Ga and InGaN, and the higher output intensity.This work demonstrates that such heterojunction composed of n-ZnO ∶Ga and p-InGaN is a promising candidate for fabricating a new generation of high-brightness 文章编号:1000-7032

Abstract Order parameters, as measured from N.M.R. experiments, are reported for a series of small rigid molecules dissolved in the liquid crystals N-(p-ethoxybenzylidene)-p′-n-butylaniline, Merck ZLI 1132, and a 55 wt per cent 1132 mixture of the two. Previous studies have shown that in this mixture the external electric field gradient due to the liquid crystal environment is zero at the site of the deuterium nucleus in D2. The order parameters are discussed in terms of a simple model for the interaction between the solute molecules and their liquid crystal environment. It is shown that the ordering of the solutes in the liquid crystal solvents can be largely explained in terms of: (i) the interaction between the molecular quadrupole moment of the solute and the average electric field gradient due to the solvent and (ii) the short range interactions between the solvent and solute which depend on the size and shape of the solute.

Herein, we reported the effects of the geometric morphology of the sidewall on the extraction efficiency of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We performed numerical analysis based on the ray-tracing method. We found that the extraction efficiency of the LEDs increased with the texturing of the sidewall. The light output intensity of the LEDs (at an injection current of 100 mA) increased by 13.8% after sidewall texturing. These results confirmed that the geometric morphology of the sidewall plays an important role in improving the extraction efficiency of LEDs.
