Objective To examine the nephrotoxicity induced caused by combined effect of arsenic and cadmium in exposed workers. Methods Urinary cadmium and arsenic were used as the exposure biomarkers of cadmium and arsenic.Urinary β_2-microglobulin(Uβ_2-MG),albumin(UALB) and N-acety-β-D-glucosaminidase(UNAG) were measured as the effective biomarkers of tubular and glomerular dysfunction induced by cadmium and arsenic.Results The combination of cadmium and arsenic induced more severe renal injury than that caused by either of the chemicals given alone.There were positive correlations and significant dose-effect among the concentrations of urinary cadmium,arsenic and levels of Uβ_2-MG,UALB,UNAG( P 0.05, P 0.01). Conclusion Cadmium combined with arsenic may have additive effect on renal dysfunction in workers exposed to arsenic and cadmium.

The zinc, cadmium and arsenic concentrations in normal teeth which were obtained randomly from the Kitakyushu area, Takachiho area and Tsushima area, were quantitatively determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry on a basis of dry weight. The results of the experiments were as follows : 1) The mean values of trace metal concentrations in 123 teeth from the Kitakyushu area were 171.96 μg/g of zinc, 0.55μg/g of cadmium and 0.26μg/g of arsenic. 2) The mean values of trace metal concentrations in 35 teeth, obtained from the healthy subjects in the Takachiho area, were 194.91μg/g of zinc, 0.76μg/g of cadmium and 0.77μg/g of arsenic. These percentages were significantly higher than those of the Kitakyushu area. 3) The mean values of trace metal concentrations in 12 teeth, obtained from the chronic As-disease in the Takachiho area, were 269.91μg/g of zinc, 1.31μg/g of cadmium and 1.65μg/g of arsenic. These levels were significantly higher than those of the healthy subjects in the Takachiho area. 4) The mean values of trace metal concentrations in 3 teeth from the Tsushima area were 167.55μg/g of zinc, 0.50μg/g of cadmium and 0.52μg/g of arsenic. 5) The mean values of zinc, cadmium and arsenic concentrations taken from various age were observed to be generally higher in the Takachiho area when compared to those of the same age groups in the Kitakyushu area and Tsushima area. 6) The Cd/Zn ratio and As/Zn ratio of teeth, obtained from the chronic As-disease in the Takachiho area, were significantly higher than those of teeth in other groups. In conclusion, the environmental pollution in the Takachiho area has relatively high levels of arsenic concentration. However, this could be considered partial offset by comparatively high levels of cadmium, zinc and another metals concentrations, too.

Abstract Ternary intercalation compound of graphite with AlF3 and F2, CxF(AlF3)y was prepared under fluorine atmosphere at temperatures of 20–400 °C. Typical 1st stage compound has a composition of C6F(AlF3)0.15 with repeat distance 9.40 Å. Rapid progress in the reaction led to the formation of graphite fluoride, (C2F)n.

Abstract To investigate the effect of cadmium on the accumulation of arsenic by Dunaliella sp., the arsenic accumulated in the alga was determined as a function of time for coexistence of the algae with arsenic and cadmium, with batch methodology. Growth of Dunaliella sp. was affected by addition of arsenic (Na 2 HAsO 4 .7H 2 O) and cadmium (CdCl.2.5H 2 O). Growth inhibition of Dunaliella sp. was accelerated by coexistence of arsenic and cadmium. The content of arsenic in Dunaliella sp. became a maximum at 15 h after exposure. The arsenic content in the cells was influenced by addition of cadmium to the solution; the arsenic content in the alga derived from growth in a 10 mg As dm −3 solution decreased from 2.7 mg g −1 in the absence of cadmium to 0.35 mg g −1 for the addition of 100 mg Cd dm −3 . Dunaliella sp. accumulated cadmium in large quantities but, in conditions of coexistence with arsenic and cadmium, the cadmium content in cells decreased with an increase in the concentration of arsenic in the growth medium Cadmium accumulation by Dunaliella sp. was observed in dead cells although arsenic accumulation was not observed. About 85% of arsenic in the cells was in the water‐soluble fraction. On the other hand, about 42% of cadmium in the cells was in the water‐soluble fraction, and about 55% was in a fraction soluble in cold trichloroacetic acid.
