During the past 10 years, there has been a growing interest in the field of culinary history. More books are being published on the topic than ever before, and groups dedicated to the study of food and culinary history have been organized in cities across North America. These groups are often affiliated with universities or public libraries as a result of their members' love of books, particularly cookbooks and books on the history and lore of food. More and more universities have also developed courses to give students a scholarly look at food history and culinary practices. The study of food history gives valuable insight into the importance that food has always held for our species and the role it has played in relation to religion, taboos, and social mores and manners.
