Genentech is partnering with the German cancer company Affimed to develop immunotherapies for multiple kinds of solid and blood cancers. Affimed is developing therapies that engage natural killer cells of the innate immune system to help direct them to attack cancer cells. Genentech will pay Affimed $96 million up front and up to $5 billion more in potential payments.

This chapter discusses the IAS 31 interests in joint ventures and IFRS 11 joint arrangements. Joint control is the contractually agreed sharing of control over an economic activity and exists only when the strategic financial and operating decisions relating to the activity require the unanimous consent of the parties sharing control. A venturer is a party to a joint venture which has joint control over that joint venture. Jointly controlled operations are carried on by each venturer using its own assets in pursuit of the joint operation. The agreement usually provides a means by which the revenue from the sale of the joint product and any expenses incurred in common are shared among the venturers. Jointly controlled assets arise from an arrangement that is a joint venture carried on with assets that are controlled jointly, whether or not owned jointly, but not through a separate entity.
