    Abstract:
Abstract Highly enhanced solid-state thermochromism is observed in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT, when deposited on a superhydrophobic polymer-SiO 2 nanocomposite coating. The conformal P3HT coating on the nanocomposite surface does not alter or reduce superhydrophicity while maintaining its reversible enhanced thermochromism. The polymeric matrix of the superhydrophobic surface is comprised of a blend of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) copolymer and an acrylic adhesive. Based on detailed X -ray diffraction measurements, this long-lasting, repeatable and hysteresis-free thermochromic effect is attributed to the enhancement of the Bragg peak associated with the d -spacing of interchain directional packing (100) which remains unaltered during several heating-cooling cycles. We propose that the superhydrophobic surface confines π–π interchain stacking in P3HT with uniform d -spacing into its nanostructured texture resulting in better packing and reduction in face-on orientation. The rapid response of the system to sudden temperature changes is also demonstrated by water droplet impact and bounce back on heated surfaces. This effect can be exploited for embedded thin film temperature sensors for metal coatings.

Reversible change in color of substances with variation of the temperature is known as thermochromism and has attracted much interest from chemist for a long time. Salicylideneanilines belong to a class of the most popular compounds that show thermochromism in the solid state. We recently succeeded for the first time in the observation of the crystal structure change associated with the thermochromism and in the determination of the structure of the colored form. Furthermore, we discovered that salicylideneanilines are generally thermochromic in the fluid solution of a saturated hydrocarbon solvent, although it has been believed that salicylideneanilines are thermochromic only in the solid state. Our study revealed that the association of the molecules plays an essential role in the thermochromism.

A new type of bis-polydiacetylene (PDA), in which two PDAs are linked via an intervening p-phenylene group, displays excellent thermochromic reversibility. Clear blue-to-red and red-to-blue colorimetric transitions are observed by R. Chang, J. Yoon, and co-workers between 20 and 120 °C. The first theoretical simulation of the new PDA is reported on page 3699, the results of which successfully explain the thermochromic reversibility phenomenon.

A new type of bis‐PDA, in which two PDAs are linked via an intervening p ‐phenylene group, is developed. The Bis‐PDA‐Ph displays exceptional thermochromic reversibility owing to the presence of unique hydrophobic interactions between alkyl chains as well as aryl moieties. The Bis‐PDA‐Ph has a well‐packed structure that causes it to display a clear blue to red colorimetric transition at elevated temperatures. To elucidate the molecular origin of the thermochromic response, a theoretical simulation of the new PDA, the results of which successfully explain the thermochromic reversibility phenomenon, is conducted. Furthermore, Bis‐PDA‐Ph‐embedded polymer fibers are used as a thermochromic sensor material. It displays excellent reversibility between 20–120 °C, which is the largest temperature range reported thus far for PDA based sensors. Finally, transient absorption spectroscopy is employed for the first time to analyze the temperature‐dependent fluorescence change of the new PDA.

Aim The thermochromism of the title compound was studied.p-C6H4OHNO2·1.5H2O showed reversible thermochromism. When heated to 135 ℃,it turned from nacarat to bright red. When droped to room temperature, the color came back laxly.Method In situ elevated temperature ultraviolet spectrum and in situ elevated temperature IR as well as DSC-TG analysis confirmed the phenomenon. Results The methods as above made sure the reversible thermochromism owing to hydration and dehydration.Conlusion The title compound was a new type thermochromic functional material.

Thermochromic inks are one of the major groups of colour-changing inks. This paper aims at discussing general aspects of thermochromic inks, dynamic colorimetric properties of leuco dye-based thermochromic inks, their stability and principle of variable-temperature colour measurement. We will analyse here a colorimetric properties of the screen-printed UV-curing leucodye thermochromic inks in red and blue shades with activation temperature of 31°C, and in green shade with activation temperature of 33°C. A small analysis of irreversible thermochromic inks will be also presented for comparison with reversible thermochromic inks. Also, a combination of different inks was made, an irreversible thermochromic ink was printed on top of the blue reversible thermochromic ink. Special attention was devoted to characterization of the colour hysteresis and the meaning of the activation temperature.
