The focus of French musical life in the war years on the capital city, and the resulting lack of Parisian interest in regional musical life, has been criticized by many. The words, from the editorial of the weekly newspaper Candide, dated 17 January 1940, summarize the aims of the Parisian musical establishment during the Second World War. Under the Nazi occupation of Paris, the Occupiers effectively dictated programmes at the Opera; the French premiere of Darius Milhaud's Medee on 6 May 1940, shortly before the fall of Paris, was of course to be the last work by the composer performed at the Opera until after the war. Several writers, including Robert Bernard, bemoaned the situation, suggesting that the Paris orchestras should perhaps undertake regional tours. The Director of the Radio decided to move broadcasts of orchestral concerts to Rennes, and the ensemble performed these concerts in the Theatre Municipal de Rennes.
