Abstract:
Corrosion behavior of chromium containing low alloyed steels immersed in seawater were studied; The variation of their corrosion rate with time as well as effect of chromium on seawater corrosion of the steels were analyzed. New views on “corrosion resistance reverse” of chromium steels and the effect of chromium on seawater corrosion resistance were postulated.After immesion in seawater for long time a reverse of the corrosion resistance of chromium steels do occur.Corrosion rate of carbon steels descend with immersion time.For chromium steels, the situation is opposite. Chromium debases the corrosion rate of steel in seawater at initial stage.In the meantime,it altered the corrosion character of the steel that corrosion rate of steel gradually ascend with immersion time.Accordingly, “corrosion resistance reverse” of chromium steels that immerse in seawater for long time was caused.Keywords:

Through exposure corrosion test in seawater for 16 years,the “reversion” phenomena of corrosion resistance of containing chromium low alloy steels such as 921 in Yulin and Qingdao seawater were first found in China,but the reason was not understood at home and abroad.In order to study the reason of “reversion”,several methods including metallography,SEM/EDS,bacteria identification and chemical analysis were used for entirely investigating the rust layer on test steels and the rust layer on 921 steel exposed in Yulin seawater was emphasized on.The reason of corrosion resistance “reversion” of some containing chromium low alloy steels in seawater has been initially found out.As the seawater corroded for a long period,the corrosion pits deeply developed and many small metal granules fell off substrate,that greatly contributed to corrosion rate.“Falling off” containing chromium steels was much serious than carbon steels and non-containing chromium steel.It is considered that the corrosion dynamic of carbon steels and low alloy steels may change from oxygen diffusion control to bacteria such as SRB corrosion control at about one year.

Potentiodynamic polarization,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and weight loss method were used to study the effect of dissolved oxygen on corrosion behavior of 1~# and 2~# hull steels in sea water.The results showed that with increase of dissolved oxygen in seawater,corrosion potential increased,and both of corrosion current density and corrosion rate increased.The weight loss tests indicated that the hull steels suffered uniform corrosion in seawater.

Corrosion behavior of nickel alloy in Chinese sea area was still not reported at present,which resulted in inconvenience for its application in seawater.Corrosion results of 9 types of nickel alloys in Qingdao sea area of China for 1,2,4 and 7 years were obtained by natural seawater exposure tests,and their corrosion behaviors were discussed.The corrosion resistance of nickel alloys in seawater is quite different.Corrosion resistances of NS334,NS335,NS336 and GH3128 in seawater are excellent,and Hastelloy G and GH181 are good.Scratch and residual stress increase the susceptibility of nickel alloys to pitting.Corrosion resistances of nickel alloys in tidal zone are better than in fully immersion zone.Effcts of halobiotic fouling on the corrosion of NS112 and NS312 in seawater are notable.Adding of Cu,Cr,Mo,W can enhance the corrosion resistance of nickel alloys in seawater.The results provide references for practice application.

When exposed to neutral, salt-containing waters, electric resistant welded pipe in carbon and low alloy steels with increased sulfur contents may suffer preferential corrosion attack in the weld area. Because of its appearance, this type of corrosion is called grooving corrosion. The susceptibility to grooving corrosion may be determined and quantitatively described by means of an accelerated potentiostatic exposure test. The importance of type, concentration, and temperature of the electrolytic solution; potential; test duration; and the sulfur content of the steel in the accelerated corrosion test and the susceptibility of steels to grooving corrosion are described. Line pipe in high frequency inductive (HFI) welded carbon and low alloy steels are resistant to grooving corrosion particularly because of their low sulfur content.

A range of stainless steels has been investigated for resistance to microbiologically influenced corrosion in seawater. The corrosion potential was monitored for stainless steel coupons exposed to sterilized seawater and to microbiologically active seawater, which showed the effect of the growth of microorganisms. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization scans confirmed that 13%Cr stainless steel is very susceptible to localized corrosion under these conditions. 316L stainless steel was also quite susceptible to localized corrosion, whereas 2205 duplex stainless displayed good resistance to localized corrosion. Naturally occurring microorganisms in the seawater were shown to exacerbate the localized corrosion.

By using tubular test loop of seawater,the corrosion behavior of 3C, 945, 09MnNb and 10CrMoAl has been studied at different flow rates of seawater.The electrochemical parameters have been measured at different flow rates of seawater. The characteristic of cathodic protection in high velocity seawater has been evaluated.Based on corrosion characteristics and feature of the materials,corrosion mechanism also was discussed.
