A methodology for eliminating algebraic equations from power system models is proposed. The proposed model has applications in steady state power system analysis and transient stability studies. The steady state solution of the proposed model is compared to traditional load flow solution techniques using a sample system. The transient response of the proposed model is also compared to a traditional transient stability model by simulating a three phase fault in the system.

This paper presents a new development in on-line transient stability assessment and control using a hybrid extended equal area criterion (EEAC) method. By integrating the EEAC method into a fast time-domain simulation program, a transient energy margin based performance index can be formulated to give a quantitative measure on the system stability, and hence to derive the necessary generation rescheduling for avoiding instability. The proposed method has been tested on a realistic 20-generator 100-bus 256-branch reduced UK system with promising results.

In this paper, the branch transient potential energy is studied to analyze the energy distribution over network and the transient stability of one-machine infinite-bus system with voltage regulator and speed governor. And the detailed branch transient potential energy function of one-machine infinite-bus system is derived. The simulation results on OMIB(One Machine and Infinite Bus) demonstrate the effectiveness of the branch transient potential energy method with detailed model.

This paper extends consistency of single machine equal area criteria and transient energy function based direct method to multi-machine system. Based on these characteristics, an approach to transient stability assessment is proposed. In multi- machine system, two generators of best forward angle and best lag angle named critical generator couple is selected, equal area criterion (EAC) is applied to them, and incorporating time domain simulation (TDS), transient stability assessment is obtained. The advantage of this approach is that it avoids generators equivalence and network reduction and needs less computation time, less information, it has the same accuracy as time domain simulation in assessing stability and system model is applicable widely. Validity carried out on a New England test system of 10 generators is reported.

Abstract Transient instability detection is investigated using a new analytical tool derived from the line transient potential energy. Instead of following the conventional approach of observing the rotor swings or comparing the critical energy and transient energy at fault clearing time, a new instability detection criterion based on the examination of the line potential energy along post-fault trajectory is developed. The main advantage of this method is that only local dynamic measurements of transmission line variables (power and phase angle differences) are required for detecting first- or multi-swing transient instability. Case studies on the 10 machine 39 bus IEEE test system showed that the proposed method is very effective and opens up new possibilities of studying transient stability and control using local transient network energy. Based on the trajectory information of the power system, this paper analyzes transient stability prediction and new generation transient stability control for large power system. This method, which is independent of system parameter and model, can tell the transient stability of the power system quickly and give the control strategy. At first, system instability is detected by the characteristics concave or convex of the critical machine trajectory of the post-fault system. Then, the multi-variables self-memory numerical predictive formula is derived to accelerate the speed of recognizing the transient stability of the power system. What's more, the control strategy by the closed-loop control system is given based on transient kinetic energy when the power system is unstable.

The large-scale intermittent wind has been incorporated into current grid. in order to achieve transient angle stability quantitative analysis and evaluation, this paper proposes a fast assessment method of wind power generators and coal-fire power generators in transient angle stability control. Using the EEAC (extended equal area criterion) angle stability quantification theory, the defense vectors and deriving transient energy equation with stability control vector map are defined. Binding Catastrophe Theory amends the amount of transient power angle catastrophe of Taylor expansion, and then the transient angle stability control catastrophe mapping mode is established. Multi-source stability control vector field concept is defined and the assessment indicator is proposed. Putting intermittent power generation unit node into New England 10-machine 39-bus system as the target system verification, validation results show that the method could be adopted for effective guiding the transient angle stability control.
