Abstract:
The English advertisement discourse could be analyzed from different angles and by different means, and semantic cohesion device is one of them. Conclusions could be drawn after analysis on the semantic cohesion devices in several Engish advertisement: firstly, the semantic cohesion devices are essential in building up the coherence of the advertisement discourse;secondly, cohesion devices including reference, ellipsis and conjuntion are frequently resourted to in the grammatical level, while reiteration seems to be the choice of most ads writers when dealing with the cohesion in terms of the lexical level. Keywords:

Lexical cohesion is a kind of non-structural means of cohesion, and it stands out as one of main cohesional mechanisms to realize textual coherence.Among various methods of connecting,it constitutes the highest level of cohesion, and it still maintains the chief medium of creating the structure of a text. Therefore this paper, from the perspective of cohesion, analyzes how lexical devices subtly link up a text through lexical relations, illustrates how lexical cohesion help demonstrate the heroes' and heroines' likeness and mind without explicit modification, and tries to deepen readers' appreciation of lexis used while comprehending the text itself.

On the basis of schema theory and the findings in cognitive linguistics, this thesis first puts forward the concept of semantic mapping and then explores the semantic interrelationship among the lexical items in discourse and the trend of their co-occurrence,pointing out that the semantic mapping among lexical items plays a key role in discourse cohesion and thus lays the foundation for the role that various cohesive devices play in discourse.

This thesis attempts to describe lexical relationships
between sentences in and between utterances in
discourse in the light of pragmatics and psycholinguistics. It was inspired by Halliday and Hasan's pioneering effort
to describe relationships of cohesion in but it goes beyond their taxonomy of lexical cohesion to include
pragmatic aspects that can serve the purposes of PL
reading research
Thus, the motivation of the present research is twofold:
i To describe lexical cohesion as a competence
phenomenon by determining the factors contributing to its achievement in text.
ii To provide an account of lexical cohesion as a
performance phenomenon by investigating the factors
affecting its interpretation in FL reading comprehension.
The articulation of the thesis reflects these two
issues: the first Chapter is a linguistic account of
lexical cohesion in English. It lays out the basis on
which cohesion and lexical cohesion should be distinguished
from coherence and lexical coherence, and reviews the
literature which has treated these phenomena in relation to the theoretical framework adopted for the present study. Thus, two main categories are proposed for the analysis of lexical cohesion as a competence and performance phenomenon: lexicosemantic cohesion which accounts for the
connectedness of text and lexicopragmatic coherence
which is a feature of the connectedness of discourse.
The Chapter also provides detailed analysis of the lexical
devices of cohesion and coherence in the light of theories
of semantics and pragmatics.
Chapter Two examines the involvement of the cognitive factor in the analysis of lexical cohesion. It deals with the concept of background or schematic knowledge viewed as an essential component of the reading process and investigates the role of top-down and bottom-up processes in the making of linguistic and pragmatic inferences
specifically when unknown vocabulary items are encountered in reading (comprehension). In Chapter Three an experimental investigation of the linguistic and non- linguistic features of the interpretation of lexical
cohesion in reading comprehension is proposed. It seeks to inquire into the processing of lexicoreferential, lexicosubstitutional and conjunctive relationships of cohesion and coherence by non-native readers of English and attempts to answer the following three research questions:
iii
1 How do FL learners 1

ztilise lexical resources or links of

function of FL proficiency?
lexical resources of cohesion and
function of language background?
Four experiments were designed to that effect and nullhypotheses
were formulated to test the performance of
subjects on a cloze test in four types of independent
variables. The findings which reveal that the use of
lexical resources of cohesion and coherence were a function
of language proficiency rather than language background, bear some pedagogical and other implications which are
discussed in the final Chapter.

Cohesion is one of the most important factors of text creation. It is a semantic concept which occurs when the interpretation of one element in the text depends on some other element. Two mutually dependent elements form a cohesive connection, which means that one element presupposes the other in such a way that it cannot be decoded and understood without that other element with which it is semantically related. Due to the fact that cohesion is confirmed in the connections among the utterances within the text and it is represented through the use of lexical and semantic means, the use of cohesive means makes the communication easier for the recipient. Cohesion refers to the ways in which the components of the surface structure of the text are interconnected in the sequence. These surface components are mutually interdependent and are in accordance with grammatical forms and conventions. The paper presents the analysis of the semantic aspect of cohesive links in the assertive texts and media-transmitted public discourse in the Croatian language. Special attention will be paid to the description of functions of the four basic types of cohesion: reference, ellipsis, cohesion realized with connectors and lexical cohesion. These will be studied with regard to the outer and inner relationships which are established among those linking devices and which occur in the corpus collected. In the analysis of the examples of cohesive types, semantic as well as syntactical and pragmatic aspects of linking will be brought together. In other words, linking within a text will be studied in the entirety of the communication process.

There are so many ways for people to communicate and interact with others and one of it is a text. Text can be analyzed by using discourse analysis theory. There are two fundamental aspects in discourse analysis. They are cohesion and coherence. This study aims to describe what are the types of grammatical and lexical cohesions used in the scientific articles, and what are the grammatical and lexical mostly used in the scientific articles. Cohesion occurs where the interpretation of some element in the discourse is dependent on that of another (Halliday & Hasan,1976). It can be said that cohesion is a tool to analyzed the discourse. The cohesion devices separated into two forms. First, grammatical cohesion consists of reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Second, lexical cohesion consists of reiteration and collocation. This research used descriptive qualitative and quantitative research. The object of this study is scientific articles, especially from Journal of English Language and Education. In this research there are five articles which has been discussed. The technique of collecting the data: Identifying the fragment that contained grammatical and lexical cohesion devices. Technique of analyzing the data were: (a) read each words of the text, (b) give marks the data that related to the subject of this study, (c) put the data into the table, and (d) conclusion. Based on the results, the grammatical cohesion were found in The Journal of English Language and Education namely : 23 references, 2 substitutions, 5 ellipsis, and 16 conjunctions while lexical cohesion : 6 repetitions, 3 synonyms, and 2 superordinate. The total of cohesion devices were found in five journals both of grammatical and lexical cohesion, there are : 46 devices. Devices which are the most appear in the journals was reference with 23 data. Keywords : Discourse analysis, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion.

Cohesion in English is concerned with a relatively neglected part of the linguistic system: its resources for text construction, the range of meanings that are speciffically associated with relating what is being spoken or written to its semantic environment. A principal component of these resources is 'cohesion'. This book studies the cohesion that arises from semantic relations between sentences. Reference from one to the other, repetition of word meanings, the conjunctive force of but, so, then and the like are considered. Further, it describes a method for analysing and coding sentences, which is applied to specimen texts.

Lexical cohesion,as a non-structural conjunctive means,is one of the various cohesive mechanisms achieving discourse coherence, and also the main means creating a discourse. To judge whether there exists lexical cohesion in a discourse,it depends not only on the semantic association, substitution and collocation of the words itself, but it also depends on the function of context. The contextual elements for judging and analyzing lexical cohesion should be unitary and coherent.Only under a unitary context, can discourse coherence be realized by lexical cohesion.

As the tangible network, cohesion is important for the coherence of a text.Based on the cohesion model put forward by Halliday and Hasan, the present paper analyzes the function of the cohesive relations in a literature text, the well-known story The Boy and The Apple Tree,in terms of reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. The use of cohesive devices does not only make the structure of the story compact, but also enables the text to achieve semantic coherence and integrity, through which the readers can better understand the theme of the text.
