The reactions between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and triphenylchloromethane were examined in pyridine medium at 95-98°C and in a mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-pyridine at 30 and 60°C. The reaction in pyridine medium (Type I) was initially a heterogeneous system, but became gradually homogeneous with the proceeding of reaction. The reaction mixture in DMSO-pyridine (Type II) was completely homogeneous from the start, unlike the heterogeneous mixture of Type I. The results obtained are as follows:(I) Type II reaction is etherized to a higher final conversion than that of Type I; i.e., the limited degrees of triphenylmethylation in Type II are 56mol% at 60°C and 51mol% at 30°C, but 46mol% in Type I. Similar results are also obtained by the infrared spectra of etherized polymer films.(II) The kinetic studies of reactions in a homogeneous system (Type II) at 30°C were examined, and the experimental data could in all cases be accounted for by the following kinetic equation:where a: initial concentration of PVA, b: initial concentration of triphenylchloromethane, x: concentration of hydroxyl group etherized for t hours, k0: initial rate constant, m: acceralated rate constant.(III) The influence of polymerization condition of PVA on the limited degree of triphenylmethylation is not observed.
