It has been recognized that the risk from the vulnerability of GPS can lead to the extreme damage in the infrastructure of the civil and military in recent years. As an example, the intentional interference to GPS signal, named GPS jamming, was really performed to misguide GPS guided weapons during Iraq war in 2003, and the fact has also followed by the serious issues on GPS in civilian community. In the modernized military society, the navigation warfare(NAVWAR) based on the GPS jamming has been emerged and introduced as a military operation. The intentional interference to the future global navigation satellite system(GNSS) involving GPS must be also an important issue to civilian users in near future. This study is focused on the fundamental research prior to the research on "Potential principle of NAVWAR" under NAVWAR of the future warfare. In this paper, we would study on the investigation of NAVWAR based on electronic warfare(EW) and analyze characteristics of the jamming against GNSS's receivers. Then the general mechanism on GNSS jamming is proposed.
    Vulnerability
Most modem weapon systems and aircraft depend, in part, on the Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigation. This reliance on GPS navigation dictates that laboratory test facilities be equipped to create realistic GPS jamming environments able to verify compliance with jamming specifications. Engineers at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWPNS) have designed and built a GPS jamming system for laboratory use to test GPS system jamming performance. This paper identifies and discusses issues related to implementing a GPS jamming system in a laboratory test environment. These issues pertain to jamming accuracy requirements, as well as important jamming system design parameters and how they may affect jamming system performance. An example of the Navigation Laboratory jamming system is presented. It addresses fabrication issues, data requirements, error handling, local and remote operations, and how to attain high accuracy and repeatability during the generation and measurement of jamming.

In recent days, the uses for Global Positioning System (GPS) has increased as now everyone has mobile phones with GPS in it. GPS data is also used in military as it provides the information about location and time which are important factors in various applications. So, the issues of vulnerability for GPS increase with extensive utilization of GPS data by public as well as defense organizations. And when vulnerability increases it becomes easier opportunity for attacker to attack the system. Here two types of attacks are modeled, one where the GPS signal may interfere with the authentic signal and second where the attacker provides wrong information to users about their location by creating forged signal with fake location address and time. The aim of this paper is to achieve successful jamming and spoofing attack using Software Define Radio (SDR). These results can contribute to speed up research on anti-jamming as well as anti-spoofing technology in order to make the GPS more secured for its users and other applications. Some points are also emphasized on anti-spoofing techniques for future research.

    Vulnerability
Critical government and industry sectors (such as law enforcement, transportation, communication, and finance) are growing increasingly dependent on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for positioning, navigation, and timing. At the same time, the availability of low-cost GNSS jamming devices are presenting a serious threat to GNSS and increasing the likelihood of outages to infrastructures relying on GNSS. The attacks range from malicious parties intentionally jamming GNSS signals within a targeted geographical region to uninformed users causing accidental interference. This paper is an overview of different approaches adopted to date to mitigate GNSS disruption caused by intentional and unintentional jamming. The first approach outlined in this paper is the use of inertial systems to aid GNSS. The second and third approaches are the filtering of jamming/interference in the spatial and time-frequency domains, respectively. The fourth approach is vector tracking of GNSS signals in the receiver.

With the increasing dependency on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for navigation and surveillance, aviation is focusing on mitigation of threats caused by a possible system unavailability due to jamming or spoofing. This research deals with pattern recognition of the time evolution of quality indicators in transmitted Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) messages during GNSS jamming in non jammed data over Central Europe. An evaluation of the quality indicators from all messages within a one month interval is presented. A practical jamming experiment was done to determine how the quality indicators are changing during a jamming presence. Afterwards, the results of the experiment are used as a foundation for the proposed jamming detection technique using ADS-B data based on pattern recognition and cluster analysis. A natural presence of a quality indicators variability is proven in the data using these methods, similar to the indicators variability during GNSS jamming.
