Abstract:
The network structure of GEO Multi-beam satellite communications network is analyzed. The model of integrated space-ground radio resource management in combination of centralized mode and distributed mode is proposed. For the quality of service(QoS) support and the special requirement of anti-jamming,some research suggestions on call admission control, beam handoff management and packet scheduling are given. Keywords:

In order to support diverse application requirements, a new standard called IEEE 802.11e is being proposed to improve quality of service in wireless LAN networks. There are, however, a few remaining challenges that need to be addressed in order to enable comprehensive QoS support using 802.11e. In this article we provide an overview of a few of these challenges, describe their possible impact on QoS, and provide a survey of techniques that potentially could be used to address the identified challenges. Specifically, we focus on three challenges: handling time-varying network conditions, adapting to varying application profiles, and managing link layer resources. Additionally, we present several potential future directions toward improved QoS in wireless networks.

With the rapid development of Internet technology and modern communication technology, LEO satellite networks have become one of the researching focuses for its broadband multimedia communications services and making personal communications available. But the wireless communications and broadcasting characteristics make LEO satellite networks vulnerable. The paper proposed a centralized multicast key management scheme based on hierarchical domain one-way function tree (HDOFT). And through the performance comparative analysis, it can be effective in reducing the computational overhead of gateway server and bandwidth of satellite networks, and increasing resource utilization rate.

Currently UMTS networks are rolled out to compliment existing GSM networks. As most UMTS mobiles will also support GSM, the question of which system to select for a given service emerges. In order to exploit the differences between radio access technologies, common radio resource management (CRRM) is employed, i.e. common management of the whole radio resources such that the assignment of mobiles to different radio technologies is flexible and considers the specific advantages of each system. The focus of the paper is on intelligent algorithms to decide the balancing of the load between the different radio technologies. We study algorithms for optimum assignment of mobiles to a radio technology during call setup as well as during the call. The decision is based on an intelligent evaluation of various aspects of the radio link. Our algorithm is based on an approach previously employed to balance the load of distributed computing systems.

3G mobile broadband evolution offers high speed data transfer. A need to develop QoS mechanisms to ensure effective handling of radio resources occures. Bottleneck for 3G data network may be located in different parts of the network, depending on the infrastructure (eg the radio access part or core network part). Operators will decide how to deal with network congestion problem: expanding the network, increasing CAPEX or finding and using ways to control traffic.

Over the last decade, European research and development into mobile systems has focused on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). This is the third-generation communications system that will be deployed in Europe in 2002 and will consist of terrestrial and satellite components. Resource management is always a big challenge in the telecommunications world. This problem becomes even more critical in satellite networks because of their limited resource and high signalling payload. Following a general description of the UMTS architecture, possible resource management techniques for an IP-based satellite-UMTS (S-UMTS) network are presented for both the access and core networks. The design of the signalling protocols needed to implement such a facility is also discussed.

Fast-packet based services are set to dominate the telecommunications business at the beginning of the next millennium. The commercial and technical reasons for using technologies such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), frame relay (FR) and the internetworking protocol (IF) within terrestrial networks are well documented and the techniques for managing such networks are fairly well understood. Future broadband networks, including IMT2000/UMTS are likely to be based on a fast-packet architecture even if the core and access elements use different technology. Satellite systems are set to adopt the same transport technologies as terrestrial systems and support the same applications and services. Many of the network and service management issues will also be similar, but some characteristics of satellite systems will raise different issues to be resolved. Future satellite systems will need a different approach to management of space segment capacity. This will require a more flexible and dynamic approach to system management which takes more account of service provider and customer requirements. The use of packet based transport would appear to be the ideal technology to achieve this due to inherent statistical multiplexing capabilities. The application of dynamic management will depend on the architecture of the system itself and the facilities required by the service providers. This paper reviews the work currently ongoing in the field of next generation access network management and how it can be applied to satellite fast-packet networks. (9 pages)
