    Abstract:
Forest ecosystem management was different and relative to ecosystem health. The origin, development and assessment of ecosystem health were described, and the difference of forest ecosystem management and classical forest management were stated.Furthermore, the relations between forest ecosystem management and ecosystem health were dissertated, including: ①forest ecosystem health should be an objective of forest ecosystem management;②ecosystem health theory was theoretical basis of specific measures of forest ecosystem management;③the specific measures of forest ecosystem management would provide necessary means to keep forest ecosystem health. In order to promote sustainable management of forest and ecological, economic, social benefit from forest, the change of management target of forest from using to keeping forest ecosystem health was an essential prerequisite.

Ecological security is a new concept in recent years. Forest ecosystem is the biggest natural ecosystem on the land, it supports human survival and development, and provides essential condition and services for civilization. The anthors introduce the concept of forest ecological security, expound the importance and the service function of forest ecosystem. The risk of forest ecosystem is analyzed, and the measures of safeguard and management are provided. 

Definition and connotation of forest ecosystem health were introduced, and existing ideas and methods of health evaluation were analyzed in this paper. Furthermore, forest ecosystem health was discussed from the aspects of the management objective approach, ecosystem approach, and integration approach. Widespread application of ecological indicators is the main means of evaluation on forest ecosystem health at present, and some material forest health evaluation methods, especially EMAP and FHM, were introduced and summarized to impel the relative researches in China.

With the 1987 Brundtland Commission report (WCED 1987) came the global acceptance of the idea of sustainable development. Sustainable development involves planning for the future and developing within certain limits such that future generations will have the same access to resources as we do today, be these resources economic, social, or ecological (WCED 1987). Extending this concept to the forest, sustainable forest management has the broad goals of managing the forest in a way that is socially, ecologically, and economically sustainable, that is, that will allow future generations to benefit from the forest as a source of social values, ecological resources, and revenue (Pavilainen 1994).

Forest ecosystem management is a complex systematic project, the boundary of ecosystem management involved plant system, social-economical system and abiological environment system. Based on the theories of landscape ecological and sustainable development, the principles for ecosystem management were put forward, including 5 principles as dominant functions principle, integrality principle and sustainable development principle, et al. According to these principles and factors of nature, society and other economic, the ecosystems were divided into 16 management by forest objective + types and function + landscape. The ecosystems management were divided into 2 groups, included 5 sub-groups, by principal component analysis and cluster analysis in the trial area. The managing measures were put forth for these groups.

Abstract Forest ecosystem management and ecosystem health are two related but different concepts. This paper expounds the origin, development, evaluation and research progress of ecosystem health, the difference between forest ecosystem management and traditional forest management science, and discusses the relationship between forest ecosystem management and ecosystem health, and holds that: 1) the health of forest ecosystem should be the goal pursued by forest ecosystem management; 2) Ecosystem health theory provides theoretical basis for specific measures of forest ecosystem management; 3) Forest ecosystem management measures also provide necessary means to maintain the health of forest ecosystem. In order to realize sustainable forest management, the goal of forest management should be changed from the traditional priority of utilization to the direction of emphasizing the health of forest ecosystem, which is the necessary prerequisite for sustainable development of ecological, economic and social benefits of forests.
