Bearing in mind the characteristics of an academic setting, as well as the developmental tasks young people inevitably face, there is a need to identify and study the factors that play an important role in the development and maintenance of psychological distress among college students. One factor that has emerged as crucial for the development of both anxiety and depression is the intolerance of uncertainty. On the other hand, there appears to be mounting evidence that mindfulness is an important factor that can be beneficial for the psychological health of college students. Taking this into consideration, the purpose of the current study was to determine the contribution of the intolerance of uncertainty and mindfulness in explaining the symptoms of depression and anxiety in a sample of female college students (n = 282) whose average age was 21. The results indicated that students had moderate levels of anxiety and depression. Additionally, they were, on average, intolerant of uncertainty and mindfulness. Two hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the intolerance of uncertainty and mindfulness significantly predict both anxiety and depression in female students, and that mindfulness partially mediates the relationship between the intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety/depression. The results are discussed in the light of previous studies, and its clinical implications.

Three studies were conducted to understand the strong relationship between anxiety and depression. Common indicators of each disorder including critical attitudes towards self and others, negative childhood experiences, low social support and use of emotion as a coping strategy were found. Another important finding is that unremitted anxiety leads to depression in approximately 50% of cases. Implications of these findings for intervention and treatment were presented.

Thousands of students in the United States suffer from anxiety and depressive disorders, many of which may be ameliorated with early intervention and evidenced-based treatment. At the same time, complete student wellness requires a consideration of both pathology and well-being. Using a dual-factor model, this chapter reviews the symptoms, resilience factors, and functional impairments associated with anxiety and depression. Recommendations for early identification, assessment, and treatment—including psychoeducation, mindfulness, and behavioral techniques—are discussed within a multitiered system of supports. Special consideration is provided to address suicide prevention and intervention. Practical recommendations and techniques for school-based practitioners are offered, in addition to assessment measures and technology resources.

Anxiety is a phenomenon which occurs when the person faces a threatening situation. It is a negative multifaceted feeling (emotion, cognitive, somatic and behavioural) which can be categorized into two types; state anxiety and trait anxiety. In the modern society, there are generally several forms of anxiety such as math anxiety, social anxiety, sport anxiety, computer anxiety, test anxiety, terror related and trauma. Many factors are contributing to the excellence of student learning; specifically, in science including science anxiety. Science anxiety refer to the students’ uneasiness feeling on learning science compared to the nonscience subjects. This concept was introduced by Mallow since 1977 through the Science Anxiety Clinic at Loyola University, Chicago. Previous studies found science anxiety increases, the academic performance of students will be degraded. It is influenced by gender which is more affects female students.

Spirituality is the quality of being concerned with the consciousness as opposed to physical materials. In this study the degree to which levels of spirituality can be related to the levels of anxiety, depression and stress among young adults were examined. Anxiety is a feeling of unease which is caused due to worry or fear; Depression is a common mental health problem that is induced due to feelings of low mood, and lastly, stress is the body’s reaction to changes that are there due to the physical environment. The aim of the study is to study the relationship between spirituality and anxiety, depression & stress among young adults. The researcher hypothesis is that there will be significant relationship between spirituality and anxiety, depression and stress among young female adults. Additionally, the hypotheses also state that there will be significant relationship between spirituality and anxiety, depression and stress among young male adults. The gathered samples from 60 participants (30 male and 30 female) were used to conduct the study. The participants were asked to fill the Spiritual Intelligence Scale and Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scale. After data collection for analysis of result, mean and correlation were used for the analysis of the data. It was found that spiritual young female adults were also found to have lower levels of anxiety, depression and stress. Meanwhile Spirituality levels didn’t impact the levels of anxiety, depression and stress of young male adults. This reasoning behind this could be the internalization of spirituality among the female participants in comparison of the male participants. Further study on this implication is required.

Background and objective: Stress, anxiety and depression, as mental health factors, creates several problems for students – the country’s future generation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of emotion regulation training on the reduction of Anxiety, Stress and Depression symptoms among university students. Methods: In this semi-experimental research a pre-post test and a control group was used. For this purpose, 186 male students using multistage cluster were selected and stress, anxiety and depression questionnaire were performed on all of them. After filling out the questionnaire, from students with a score of 28 or more, 40 ones were randomly selected and were divided into two groupsunder training and control. The experimental group received emotion regulation training and the control group did not receive the training. Training was performed in the experimental group for eight sessions (two sessions a week and each half an hour) on all subjects. Before the training and after that, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale was completed. The descriptive statistics and MANCOVA were used to analyze the data. Results: Analysis of covariance showed that the anxiety, stress and depression scores of student in the emotion regulation training group compared to the control group at posttest hadreduced (P<0.001). Conclusion: Therefore emotion regulation training significantly reduces the symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression. These results have important implications in the field of mental health of students. Paper Type: Research Aricle.

Depression and anxiety are the most prominent mental health concerns among college campuses. Thus, it is important to examine factors linked with rising depression and anxiety symptoms. The purpose of this study is to examine the interrelationship between college student family functioning (N = 500), family communication, self-compassion, and anxiety and depression levels, and whether gender moderates these relationships. Specifically, we tested whether positive communication and self-compassion were significant indirect effects in the relationship between levels of chaotically-disengaged family functioning and the outcome variables of anxiety and depression symptomology. Findings reveal that positive communication and self-compassion were significant indirect effects in the relationship between chaotically-disengaged family functioning and depression and anxiety for females only. Results may inform interventions for practitioners who provide services.

Depression is a disabling illness which increases the risk of suicide. The Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a rise in fear, anxiety, stress, and depression among the population: of these, university undergraduates from countries severely affected by COVID-19 are some of the most vulnerable of all, as they face strict lockdown measures and have fewer resources to cope with it. The aim of this study was to analyze the levels of fear of COVID-19, stress, anxiety, and depression during lockdown among undergraduates from Ecuador, and to test these possible predictors of depression using a model taken from our study of the scientific literature. A total of 640 undergraduates (72% women) between 18 and 47 years old (M = 21.69; S.D = 4.093) were surveyed. The resulting mean levels found for stress, anxiety, and depression were above levels considered non-pathological. Women showed higher levels of fear of COVID-19 than men. The statistical prediction for depression showed a good fit. This depression could be related: both directly and positively by fear of COVID-19 and stress, and indirectly, as a result of these two factors, positively mediated by anxiety. Our study concludes by highlighting the important role that the complex relationships between fear, stress, and anxiety can play in the development of depression symptoms and how they can be taken into account in programs aimed at preventing and alleviating this disorder. We propose some general measures for reducing fear of COVID-19 and stress and suggest that specific programs be designed to control and overcome anxiety among undergraduates.
