By employing a new strategy presented recently by Wulf etal., axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADSA) can be used to determine simultaneously the surface tension and the density of polymer melts from sessile drops at elevated temperatures. This required the modification of the ADSA algorithm to replace the density by the mass of the drop as input parameter and the development of a closed high temperature chamber whose temperature can be precisely controlled. In addition, special sample holders for the formation of pendant and sessile drops at elevated temperatures were needed. Recently, their design has been improved, which is described in this paper. For a commercial epoxy resin (DER 664 UE), it is shown that measurements with sessile drops yield essentially the same surface tension values and temperature coefficients as with pendant drops. The densities determined with ADSA are comparable to independent PVT results.

The advantages of image analysis as applied to surface tension measurements by the sessile drop technique are discussed. It is demonstrated that valuable effective improvements of dimensional resolution are obtained. Errors in surface tension arising from various unavoidable sources such as chemical reactions or optical distortions are shown to be the main difficulties in applying the sessile drop technique at high temperature. This suggests a limiting spatial resolution of the digitizer beyond which no further improvements to the accuracy of the surface tension results are possible. The technique has been applied to determine the surface tension of liquid Cu, Bi and Ag as well as a series of sodium borosilicate glasses.

This study proposes a method for identifying correlations between tension and drop height for sessile droplets in a roll-toroll processing system. The effect of tension and drop height on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is presented. Design of experiment (DOE) methodology and statistical analysis are used to define a correlation between the process parameters. The contact angle is decreased while increasing tension and drop height. The influence of the tension is less significant on the contact angle compared with the effect of the drop height. However, tension should be considered as a major parameter because it is not easy to fix with roll eccentricity and compensating speed of the driven roll. The results of this study show that the effect of tension on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is more important than drop height because the drop height is fixed when the process systems are determined.

The basic principle of measuring spreading coefficients by the large sessile drop method has been introduced. The spreading coefficients of some liquids on the paraffin and gelatin film were measured. The results show that the contact angles calculated from spreading coefficients are equal to the measured volues. The surfactants often can improve the wetting behavior.

Experiments of wettability with eight liquids such as deionized water on the surface of PTFE and five other solid materials were implemented by sessile drop method, contact angles were measured based on the LB-ADSA mode by ADSA software. The surface tension of substrates were calculated by new theoretical equation. The results show that when wettability and solid surface tension is studied by sessile drop method, there exist sensitive area and insensitive area which have effects on the change of contact angle caused by surface tension.Since when the surface tension of measuring liquid is much larger than that of substrate, the change in the solid surface tension has sensitive effect on the contact angle, and the value of solid surface tension calculated with the new theoretical equation is well consistent and accurate,it is feasible to use large surface tension liquid pure water as the measuring liquid for the calculation of most surface tension of high polymer. The results also suggest that the values of solid surface tension caculated with new method are larger than those reported by relevant literature, which indicates that the values of solid surface tension caculated with existing surface tension calculation methods are smaller.

The surface tension of molten tin was determined by a set of self-developed digital equipment with sessile drop method at oxygen partial pressure of 1.0 × 10-6 MPa under different temperatures, and the dependence of surface tension of molten tin on temperature was also discussed. The emphasis was placed on the comparison of surface tension of the same molten tin sample measured by using different equipments with sessile drop method. Results of the comparison indicate that the measurement results with sessile drop method under the approximate experimental conditions are coincident, and the self-developed digital equipment for surface tension measurement has higher stability and accuracy. The relationships of surface tension of molten tin and its temperature coefficient with temperature and oxygen partial pressure were also elucidated from the thermodynamic equilibrium analysis.
