    Abstract:
PurposeThe influence of acupuncture at point Zusanli (S 36) on the antral area was observed. MethodsIn accordance with the wholism concept and meridian th eory in Chinese medicine, AloKA SSD 630 B ultrasonic equipment was employed t o observe the gastric antrum areas in 180 health persons respectively 3 minutes before and after acupuncture at Zusanli (S 36).Results and ConclusionAfter acupuncture, antral areas increase d obviously and stomach moved more quickly, which presented an effective acupoin t for the treatment of gastric diseases.

A model of experimental gastric dysrhythmia in rabbits was set up to evaluate the effect of different acupoints on regulating gastric dysrhythmia in rabbits so as to promote acupuncture treatment for this kind of disease.A model of gastric dysrhythmia in rabbits was established by the rotation method using the basic electrical rhythm (BER) as an objective index. After puncturing at the points of Zusanli (ST36), Neiguan (PC6), Tiaokou (ST38) and Tianquan (PC2) in the four groups of experimental gastric dysrhythmia rabbits, the difference in regulatory effects on the disturbance and frequency of the gastric electric slow wave was observed. Before needling at the specific acupoints Zusanli and Neiguan, the percentage of disturbance electric slow wave for the Zusanli and Neiguan groups was 57.0785 ± 10.644 and 55.5173 ± 6.0500, respectively; after such needling, the percentage was 43.7823 ± 10.1518 and 43.5147 ± 6.8983 for the Zusanli and Neiguan groups, respectively, while the frequency of electric slow wave for the Zusanli and Neiguan groups was 2.2870 ± 0.3800 and 2.4020 ± 0.3536, respectively, before needling and after needling, the frequency was 2.7090 ± 0.5865 and 2.9220 ± 0.4923 for the Zusanli and Neiguan groups, respectively. Comparing the percentage and frequency for the Zusanli and Neiguan groups before and after needling, the result shows that both groups have a significant difference statistically (P < 0.05) but between the Zusanli and Neiguan groups, there was no significant difference. Before and after needling the nonspecific acupoints of Tiaokou and Tianquan, there was no difference between the Tiaokou and Tianquan groups. Between the Zusanli and Tiaokou groups and the Neiguan and Tianquan groups, there are significant differences in regulating gastric dysrhythmia. This model is suitable for the observation of gastric dysrhythmia. The specific acupoints of Zusanli and Neiguan have good effects on the treatment of gastric dysrhythmia.

After an intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide in rats, there was pathologic changes in hemopoietic, immune and visceral function. Acupuncture respectively at Zusanli, Dazhui and Shenshu points could decrease the above mentioned harms in the rats, the effect of acupuncture on hemopoietic function: Dazhui more than or equal to Zusanli, Zusanli more than Shenshu; the effect of acupuncture on immune function: Zusanli more than Dazhui, Dazhui more than or equal to Shenshu; the effect of acupuncture on the function of the liver and the kidney: Shenshu more than or equal to Zusanli, Zusanli more than Dazhui. The effect of acupuncture at all three points, i.e. Zusanli. Dazhui and Shenshu was more than that at any single point due to their coordination. There was no obvious effect when acupuncture at non-acupoints on tail.

The aim of this study was to investigate mast cell (MCs) distribution in the vicinity of the needle tract formed after acupuncture in Zusanli (ST36) acupoint in rats. MCs were detected by histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy, and evaluated quantitatively. It was established that after acupuncture in ST36 acupoint the integrity of the epithelium, dermis, subcutaneous connective tissue, fascia, epimysium and striated muscles was disrupted and folded to the direction of the needle tract. In the thickened connective tissue MCs were observed close to the needle tract, without visible differences in their number along the tract, but most of them were with signs of degranulation, possibly due to acupuncture. It could be presumed that acupuncture in ST36 caused recruitment and activation of MCs followed by degranulation which most probably influenced the local microenvironment.

Abstract Background Although the relationship between deqi sensations and curative effect has always been controversial, deqi sensations has been regarded as the key indicator of clinical efficacy of acupuncture therapy. There is little evidence for standardization or visualization of the mechanism of acupuncture’s therapeutic effect. This trial aims to evaluate the effect of needling at Zusanli (ST36) on antral contraction function as visualized by ultrasound. Methods This is a two-arm, single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. A total of 116 acupuncture-naïve healthy subjects will be randomly allocated to the acupuncture group or sham acupuncture group in a 1:1 ratio. Participants in the acupuncture group will receive manual acupuncture at Zusanli (ST36) with the needling depth at crural interosseous membrane. Those in the sham acupuncture group will be given penetrating needling depth at the superficial fascia layer. The primary outcome will be the changes in antral contraction frequency (ACF) before and after acupuncture. The secondary outcomes will be the changes in the thermal infrared spectrum of gastric area skin, the antral contraction amplitude (ACA), the antral movement index (AMI), and the scores on the Chinese version of Massachusetts General Hospital Acupuncture Sensation Scale (C-MASS). The adverse events will be evaluated and recorded in detail. Discussion This study may provide visual and objective evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of manual acupuncture at Zusanli (ST36). In addition, the results of this study will help to identify the role of Zusanli (ST36)in the inducing deqi . Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2000040686 . Objective To study physiological foundation of acupuncture Deqi. Methods 28 healthy volunteers who never experienced acupuncture were recruited. The right Zusanli(ST36) and a site 1.5 cm beside Zusanli(ST36)(nominated as A) were acupunctured at different time.Shallow and deep acupuncturing was inserted at Zusanli(ST36).Only deep acupuncturing was inserted at A.Hemodynamic parameters of the anterior tibial artery including the peak value in the systolic phase(Vmax),the average blood flow velocity(Vm),and the inner diameter of vessels(Dist) were observed with colored Doppler ultrasound before,at the end of acupuncture, and 3 min after Deqi response. Results There was significant difference in those parameters between before acupuncture and 3 min after deqi response when deep acupuncturing at Zusanli(ST36)(P0.05),but was not significant difference when shallow acupuncturing(P0.05).There was significant difference in ΔVmax and ΔVm between acupuncture at Zusanli(ST36) and A points(P0.05).Conclusion Arterial haemodynamics variation seems to be associated with acupuncture Deqi.

Objective To explore the relatively specific effect of acupuncture at the lower limb part of the stomach meridian on regulation of electrogastrogram. Methods The dys-functional state of the gastric electrical activity regularity decline was developed by continuously intravenous import of anisodamine hydrochloride solution. The stomach meridian's acupoints Zusanli (ST36),Liangqiu (ST34) and nonpoints 1.5cm aside acupoints were acupunctured. The regulative effects on electrogastrogram (EGG) were compared among points and nonpoints. Results The regularity decline of the gastric electrical activity could be promoted by acupuncture at points or nonpoints, the regulative effects on gastric electrical activity at Zusanli and Liangqiu points was better than that at nonpoints. Conclusion There were relative specificity in the lower limb part of the stomach meridian and stomach function.
