Abstract:
To determine whether there are paths for fracture lines, along which the cortical bone of long bones tends to split, a rabbit femur was split with a chisel and the course of the fracture line was investigated. Macroscopic observation of the rabbit femur confirmed that the course of the fracture line of the split bone has a constant direction. Microscopic cross-sectional observation showed that the fracture line ran along the curve of the cementing line, haversian lamella, or both. Microscopic examination of longitudinal sections showed that the course of the haversian canal was nearly parallel to the long axis of the bone. Furthermore, small cavities in the bone were also arranged parallel to this direction. We thus confirmed that the fracture line tends to occur along lamellar structures or areas with weak physical and bond strength. Keywords:

Abstract The high mechanical strength of the lamellar Ti-6Al-4V extruded rod was characterized. The grain morphology of the extruded Ti-6Al-4V rod was investigated by optical microscopy. The microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V alloy consists of very fine α lamella of approximately 2.5 µ m in thickness and β lamella with 1 µ m thickness. Besides, a numerical model has been presented that reproduces the morphology of the lamellar colonies. In particular, the representative volume element with 512 elements, 4096 elements and, 32768 elements are studied with the C3D8 linear element. Experimental and numerical comparisons of the lamellae morphology have been presented.

We investigated the microstructural evolution of Sn(96.4)Ag(2.8)Cu(0.8) solder through in situ heating transmission electron microscopy observations. As-soldered bump consisted of seven layers, containing the nanoeutectic lamella structure of AuSn and Au₅Sn phases, and the polygonal grains of AuSn₂ and AuSn₄, on Au-plated Cu bond pads. Here, we found that there are two nanoeutectic lamellar layers with lamella spacing of 40 and 250 nm. By in situ heating above 140°C, the nanoeutectic lamella of AuSn and Au₅Sn was decomposed with structural degradation by sphering and coarsening processes of the lamellar interface. At the third layer neighboring to the lamella layer, on the other hand, Au₅Sn particles with a zig-zag shape in AuSn matrix became spherical and were finally dissipated in order to minimize the interface energy between two phases. In the other layers except both lamella layers, polycrystal grains of AuSn₂ and AuSn₄ grew by normal grain growth during in situ heating. The high interface energy of nanoeutectic lamella and polygonal nanograins, which are formed by rapid solidification, acted as a principal driving force on the microstructural change during the in situ heating.

Effect of Heat Treatment and Composition on Grain Size and Lamellar Spacing of a Lamellar TiAl Alloy
The article presents the results of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) conducted on a Ti–46.5Al–2.5V-1.0Cr–0.3Ni alloy before and after different heat treatments. Heat treatment of the alloy at 1340°C followed by cooling leads to the formation of the fully lamellar microstructure which consists of γ lamellae mostly and of small amount of α2 lamellae. The cooling rate of 50°C/min in alloy tcx1-G produced an optimal microstructure. This cooling rate generated finest lamellae with the smallest individual lamella spacing among the alloys.

Abstract Anti-parallel stacked lamellar films of N-methyl-4-octadecyloxystilbazolium arylcarboxylates (C18O-Stz+X-) were found to undergo reversible layer expansion and shrinkage along the c-axis on the glass plates under alternative illumination at λ>350 and 254 nm. The stacked lamellar units changed in length according to the phase transition of the lamella structure induced by the photochemical [2+2] cyclodimerization and cycloreversion of C18O-Stz+X- in the organized assembly.
